Definitions
Before we discuss this career path, it’s important to elaborate on what is logistics, its
relationship with industrial production engineering and what this specialist does.

Logistics: refers to the planning, implementation, and management of the movement and
storage of goods, materials, and resources across a supply chain. It includes overseeing
everything from procurement to transportation, warehousing, and distribution, ensuring
that products are efficiently moved from suppliers to customers. Additionally, it is a field
closely linked to Industrial Production Engineering (IPE), as it plays a crucial role in
optimizing production systems. IPE engineers focus on streamlining processes, reducing
waste, and increasing efficiency in manufacturing and distribution. Logistics is a key
element of IPE, as it directly affects inventory management, production flow, and the
timely delivery of materials. Effective logistics systems support IPE's goal of maximizing
productivity and reducing operational costs across industrial operations.

Industrial Logistics Specialist: also known as a logistician, manages the movement of

goods, materials, people, and equipment within a company or organization. Their tasks
include:

 Purchasing: Ensuring materials and components are procured and stocked for
production.
 Transportation: Overseeing the transport of materials from suppliers to production
sites.
 Inventory Management: Keeping track of inventory and work orders.
 Warehousing: Managing warehouse operations and supervising staff.
 Distribution: Handling the processing and delivery of supplies or materials to
various points in the supply chain. Logisticians may work within a company's
logistics department or for third-party firms specializing in areas such as freight
shipping.

3
Education Requirements
Logistic education is the process of learning about logistics, a field that involves supply
chain management, transportation, and other related areas. It also refers to the processes
and systems that streamline education at universities of applied sciences.

Here is a list of steps you may take to become a logistic analyst:

 Complete a bachelor's degree in a relevant field

Many logistic analysts have a bachelor's degree in a field that related to logistics, business
management or supply chain management. A Bachelor of Science in logistics and
supply chain management is the most relevant degree to this profession, but many
logistic analysts also have degrees in business analytics, business administration and
operations management. These degrees often educate you on many topics valuable to
logistic analysis, such as operations research, production planning, transportation
logistics, database management and supply chain strategies. An associate degree in a
related field with similar coursework may also be a viable substitute for a bachelor's
degree.

 Complete a master's degree

Some logistic analysts decide to continue their education and pursue a master's degree
before entering the workforce. A Master of Science in logistics and supply chain
management is one example of a degree that may prepare you well for a position as a
logistic analyst. Any master's degrees in supply chain management, operations
management or logistics may also provide valuable educational qualifications for such
positions.

 Obtain certifications

Logistic analysts don't have to obtain any specific certifications in order to work for an
organization, but completing one or more related certifications may help increase your
qualifications for such positions. The Certified Professional Logistician (CPL) credential,
Certified Logistics Technician (CLT), Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) and
Certified Master Logistician (CML) are all examples of certifications available to you
that may help further qualify you for logistic analyst positions.

 Gain related professional experience

Many companies look for candidates who have at least a few years of related experience
when hiring logistic analysts. Experience as a business manager, sales manager, logistics
clerk, dispatcher, financial advisor or accountant may help qualify you for logistic analyst
roles, as many of these positions have responsibilities that also are part of a logistic

4
analyst job. Additionally, if you work in a related position, you may find employment as
a logistic analyst through internal promotion within the same organization.

 Develop your skills

Developing skills in decision making, quantitative analysis, communication, teamwork,

attention to detail, leadership and finance can all help further qualify you for logistic
analyst positions. You can develop these skills by working directly on logistics projects,
reading educational literature and attending training. You may continue to work to
develop your skills throughout your professional and educational career.

Common Training
The common training types can be:

 Company logistics process training: A detailed presentation of internal

processes, from receiving raw materials to shipping finished products. This
includes mapping flows, identifying critical points, and understanding the tools
used;
 Introduction to management systems: Training on the systems used by the
company to manage logistics operations, such as WMS (Warehouse Management
System), TMS (Transportation Management System), and ERP (Enterprise
Resource Planning);
 Quality training: Presentation of the company's quality management systems,
such as ISO 9001, and the tools used to ensure the quality of products and services;
 Organizational culture: Presentation of the company's values, mission, and
vision, as well as internal policies and employee behavior expectations.

Training Objectives:

 Integration: Facilitate the adaptation of the new employee to the company culture
and work environment;
 Alignment: Ensure that the new employee understands the company's
expectations regarding their performance;
 Skills development: Develop the technical and behavioral skills necessary for the
job;
 Error prevention: Reduce the occurrence of errors and ensure the quality of
operations from the start.

5
Required Languages
For an industrial logistics specialist, when discussing required languages, it is not limited
to spoken languages. It also includes essential communication skills, which can be:
 Important Languages: English is fundamental, as it is the standard language in
international trade and global logistics. Other languages can be valuable depending
on the region, such as Spanish, Mandarin, or German.

 Technical Language: besides languages, it is important to master specific logistics

terms, such as supply chain, lead time, just-in-time, cross-docking, and 3PL.
Fluency in English can be challenging, as it often involves technical terminology.
This language facilitates communication with suppliers and clients.

 Digital Language: the use of tools like ERPs (Enterprise Resource Planning) and
logistics software requires knowledge of technology-related languages, such as
basic system commands or even programming.
