14) (a) The sum of the squares of two consecutive odd numbers is 394. Find the numbers.
(b) Find the whole number which when decreased by 20 is equal to 69 times the reciprocal of the number
(c )The difference of the squares of two numbers is 45. The square of the smaller number is 4 times the
larger number. Find the numbers.

15) (a) Arjun is 𝑥 years old and his father is 𝑥 2 years old. When his father becomes 11x years old. Arjun
becomes 𝑥 2 . Find their present ages.
(b) If Maya were younger by 5 years than what she really is, then the square of her age (in years) would have
been 11 more than 5 times her actual age. What is her age now?

(c )The sum of the reciprocals of my ages (in years) 3 years ago and 5 years from now is 3. Find my present

16) (a) The hypotenuse of a right triangle is 6m more than twice the shortest side. If the third side is 2m less than
the hypotenuse, find the sides of the triangle.

(b) The length of the sides forming right angle of a right triangle are 5x cm and (3x - 1)cm. If the area of the
triangle is 60 cm2 . Find its hypotenuse.
(c) Find the dimensions of the prayer hall given in the below figure.

17) (a) A train travels 360 km at a uniform speed. If the speed had been 5km/h more, it would have taken 1 hour
less for the same journey. Find the speed of the train.
(b) A train takes 2 hours less for a journey of 300 km if its speed is increased by 5 km/hr from its usual
speed. Find the usual speed of the train.
( c )A journey of 192 km from a town A to town B takes 2 hours more by a ordinary passenger train than a
super fast train. If the speed of the faster train is 16 km/h more, find the speeds of the faster and the passenger
train.
(d)A plane left 30 minutes late than its scheduled time and in order to reach the destination 1500 km away in
time, it had to increase its speed by 100 km/h from the usual speed. Find its usual speed.
( e )A motorboat whose speed in still water is 18 km/h, takes 1 hour more to go 24 km upstream than to
return downstream to the same spot. Find the speed of the stream. (In km/h)
18) (a) A person on tour has ₹ 360 for his expenses. If he extends his tour for 4 days, he has to cut down his daily
expenses by ₹ 3. Find the original duration of the tour.
(b) A party of tourists booked a room in a hotel for Rs.1200. Three of the members failed to pay, as a result,
others had to pay Rs.20 more (each). How many tourists were there in the party?

20) One – fourth of a herd of camels was seen in the forest. Twice the square root of the herd had gone to

21) Read the following text carefully and answer the questions that follow:
The tradition of pottery making in India is very old. In fact, it is older than Indus Valley Civilization. The
shaping and baking of clay articles has continued through the ages. The picture of a potter is shown below:
A potter makes a certain number of pottery articles in a day. It was observed on a
particular day the cost of production of each article (in ₹ ) was one more than
twice the number of articles produced on that day. The total cost of production
on that day was ₹ 210.
1. Taking number of articles produced on that day as x, form a quadratic
equation in x. (1)
2. Find the number of articles produced and the cost of each article. (1)

3. Find the cost of production of 15 articles. (2)

OR

Find the number of articles made by Potter in a day if the total cost of production is₹ 1575. (2)
22) Read the following text carefully and answer the questions that follow:
While designing the school year book, a teacher asked the student that the length and width of a particular photo
is increased by x units each to double the area of the photo. The original photo is 18 cm long and 12 cm wide.
4. Write an algebraic equation depicting the above information. (1)
5. Write the corresponding quadratic equation in standard form. (1)
6. What should be the new dimensions of the enlarged photo? (2)

Can any rational value of x make the new area equal to 220 cm 2 ? (2)
