ENGG THERMODYNAMICS

ASSIGNMENT 5 VAPOUR POWER CYCLES

1. A thermal power plant operates with a boiler generating superheated steam at 50 bar
and 450oC and a condenser working at 0.1 bar pressure. Steam expands isentropically in
the turbine. Calculate (a) the power output (b) plant efficiency and (c) the heat
requirement in the boiler. Neglect pump work. Take mass flow of steam as 20 kg/s.

2. The boiler in a power plant produces 10 kg/sec of superheated steam at 60 bar and
450oC. Considering a turbine efficiency of 85 % and turbine exhaust pressure of 0.1 bar,
find out (a) the power output (b) plant efficiency and (c) the heat rejection rate in the
condenser. Neglect pump work.

3. The boiler in a power plant produces steam at 50 bar and 500oC. Considering isentropic
processes both for the turbine and the pump, find out (a) the specific work output of
the turbine (b) specific work input needed for the pump (c) plant efficiency and (c) the
heat rejection per kg of steam in the condenser. The turbine exhausts steam at 0.1 bar.

4. A thermal power plant based on a Reheat-Rankine cycle, operates with a boiler

generating superheated steam at 50 bar and 450oC and a condenser working at 0.1 bar
pressure. Steam expands isentropically in the high pressure turbine to 10 bar after
whuch it is reheated to 400oC and again expands in the low pressure turbine. Calculate
(a) the power output and (b) plant efficiency. Neglect pump work. Take mass flow of
steam as 10 kg/s.

5. A thermal power plant based on a Reheat-Rankine cycle, operates with a boiler

generating superheated steam at 60 bar and 500oC and a condenser working at 0.1 bar
pressure. The reheater pressure is 10 bar. Assuming perfect reheating and neglecting
pump work Calculate (a) the power output and (b) plant efficiency. Take mass flow of
steam as 10 kg/s.

6. The boiler in a power plant operating on a Regenerative-Rankine cycle produces steam

at 50 bar and 500oC. The condenser pressure is 0.1 bar. The pressure maintained in the
feed water heater is 10 bar. Neglecting pump works. Calculate (a) the work output and
(b) plant efficiency and (c) the fraction of generated steam extracted for regeneration.

While solving each the above problems, first draw the flow diagram, T-s and h-s diagrams,
make a list of given data with units and then proceed for calculation. Take care of units at
every step.
