IGCSE Options Booklet

(2023-2024)

1 Your future, your choices

Introduction to IGCSE s
Pearson Edexcel International GCSEs have been available for use internationally since 2009.

They are used by over 800 centers in over 80 countries. There are currently more than 100,000
learners studying Pearson Edexcel International GCSEs in countries throughout Asia, Africa,
Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America.

IGCSE assessment takes place at the end of the course and can include written, oral,
coursework and practical assessment. This broadens opportunities for students to
demonstrate their learning, particularly when their first language is not English. In many
subjects there is a choice between foundation and higher curricula, making IGCSE suitable
for a wide range of abilities.

IGCSEs with Pearson Edexcel (& AQA Media) are graded 9-1.

IGCSE examination sessions occur twice a year, in January and May. Results are issued in
March and August. The standards of IGCSE are aligned with the GCSE qualification taken in
England.

What IGCSE s are on offer?

The following subjects form the compulsory part of the programme of study:

As part of the extra curriculum, it may be possible to study other courses of languages, with

Home learning
Home learning is an important part of the academic development of pupils; it must therefore
be a worthwhile exercise. It is set each week through electronic platforms or projects. In
Year 10 pupils should expect assignments for each IGCSE subject. Students are expected to
manage their time appropriately and submit according to deadlines. Home learning set by
subject teachers can include tasks that need completion for the next lesson or extended
tasks that may take a longer period. Teachers take care to plan differentiated assignments;
this may be by task or outcome.

What is this booklet for and how to use it?
This booklet is designed to help you make the best choices for the career of your dreams.
Please note that some of the opportunities we offer may change because we review what
we teach and how we teach it and because of high or low student numbers applying for
certain subjects. Any changes will be discussed with you personally if they affect you. All
students will have the opportunity of an interview with senior staff to discuss their choices.

Read the booklet carefully then use this information, in consideration with your current
levels, to decide which courses will be best for you to continue with into Year 10 and 11.
You should then complete the Google options form.

Possible A Level and Career choice implications
Although Post 16 is more than two years away, your decisions now may affect your options
at AS/A-level. For most subjects, it is vital that if you wish to take them at A-level you must
select them for IGCSE. While not recommended, it is possible not to choose certain subjects
(for example Geography, History) at IGCSE and take them up at Sixth Form level. This really
only applies if you are very good at them but wish to make time in Year 10 and for other
subjects. However, if you do wish to study any of these subjects at A-level, it is a great
advantage to choose them for IGCSE.

The fact that the Sciences are core IGCSE subjects at the school is helpful to you beyond the
Post 16 level. We know that if there is a reasonable chance that you wish to study Medicine
or a related area at university, you must study all three sciences (Biology, Chemistry and
Physics) for IGCSE.

Pre-16 Qualifications and University Entrance

The following information is taken from a leaflet issued by the Russell Group, which provides
guidance to students about how their IGCSE subjects can affect their course choices at some
universities:

· When applying to a university, and especially for a course at a competitive university, it is

important that you consider all aspects of the entrance requirements, including the IGCSE
or other standard level requirements.

· Universities may ask for a specific number of IGCSEs (or their equivalent). For example,
several medical courses ask for five (sometimes more) top grades.

· IGCSE English or another standard level equivalent is very often required at Grade C at least.
At many universities this is a universal entry requirement for any course. Mathematics is
only slightly less commonly asked for. Occasionally a university will require a foreign
language for entry to any course.

· For many courses a grade C at least in IGCSE English is needed, with science and
engineering courses often specify this. Equally, courses such as Business and Psychology,

for a grade C in mathematics and, in some cases, sciences.

5
The IGCSE or other standard level entrance requirements for individual degree courses are
quite varied. In some cases, a particular subject or grade is required at standard level if it

The summary below gives an idea of some of the IGCSE requirements that you might come

to check university websites detailed requirements before applying.

· To study any degree at university you must have secured a grade C in both English and
Math.

· Applicants to study Medicine are required to have very good IGCSE results in Math, Science
and English.

· For a Business degree, a grade C/B in IGCSE Math is required.

· A grade C/B in Math and Science is often required for a degree in Psychology.

If you would like more information, the Senior Leadership team will be happy to discuss how
these points may affect the future choices of your son/daughter.

What is a good reason to choose a course?

You should base your choices on:
· Subjects you are good at this will lead to better motivation and your best results.
· Subjects which interest you, which you enjoy and which you want to study for two years.
. Subjects which may help you with your future career (if you already have some idea of
what this might be).

Do not choose a particular course just because you get on well with the teacher or because
a friend chooses it. The chances are that you will have a different teacher next year and you
may not be in the same class as your friend.
