Design Steps
• Find target Mean Strength
• Approximate air content
• Selection of w/c ratio
• Selection of water content
• Calculation of Cementitious Content
• Proportion of volume of coarse aggregate and fine aggregate
• Mix Proportioning
• Mix Proportioning for Trial 1
• Adjustments in trial design
• Mix Proportioning after adjustment
Step1: Find target Mean Strength
• Clause 4.2 IS 10262:2019
• F’ck=70+1.65X6=79.9 N/mm2
• F’ck=70+8=78N/mm2
• S given from Table 2
• X given from Table 1
• Therefore Target Mean=79.9
Step 2: Approximate air content
• For 20mm MSA, approximate air content=0.5% of volume of concrete
Step 3: Selection of w/c ratio
• As per clause 6.2.5
• w/c=0.29 for 20mm
• Also, from table 5
of IS 456:2000, maximum
w/c ratio =0.50 based on
exposure conditions
Step 4: Selection of Water Content
• Table 7 is used without chemical admixture for 50mm slump using Angular Coarse Aggregate
𝑥−50 3
• 𝑊𝐶𝑋 = 𝑊𝐶50 + 𝑋 𝑋𝑊𝐶50
25 100
90−50 3
• 𝑊𝐶𝑋 = 186 + 𝑋 𝑋186
25 100
• WCx=194.928 kg/m3 of concrete
• Also, if superplasticizer is used
water content has to be reduced
by 30%
So,WC=136.449 kg/m3 of concrete
Step 5: Calculation of Cementitous Content
𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑡 136.449
• 𝐶𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑢𝑠 𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑡 = = = 470.51 𝑘𝑔/𝑚3
𝑤\𝑐 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜 0.29
• >= Minimum cement Content from table 5 IS 456:2000
• From Cl 5.4.1 cementitious materials content may be increased by
10% for preliminary trial
• 1.1X 470.51=517.561 kg/m3
136.449
• 𝑅𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑠𝑒𝑑 𝑤\c 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜 = = 0.264
517.561
• Fly Ashcontent=15% X 517.561=77.63 kg/m3
• Cement Content=517.561-77.63=439.926 kg/m3<450kg/m3 OK
Step 6: Proportion of Volume of Coarse
Aggregate and Fine Aggregate
• As per cl. 6.2.6 of IS 10262:2019
• Vol of coarse aggregate/unit vol
0.3−𝑤
of any w/c ratio=𝑉𝐶𝐴@0.3 + 𝑋0.01
0.05
0.3−0.264
Vol of coarse aggregate/unit vol of any w/c=0.66+ 𝑋0.01
0.05
=0.6672=66.72%
Step 7: Mix Proportioning
Total Volume=1m3

Vol.of cement© 439.426 kg 3.15 439.426/3.15X1000=0.1395
