High Strength Concrete (M85)

Step-1

Stipulation for proportioning

(a) Grade designation : M85
(b) Type of cement : OPC 53 grade conforming
to IS 269
(c) Silica fume : Conforming to IS 15388
(d) Maximum nominal size of aggregate : 20mm
(e) Workability : 50mm (slump)
(f) Method of concrete placing : Pumping
(g) Type of aggregate : Crushed stone angular
aggregate
(h) Chemical admixture type : Hyper plasticizer

Step-2
Test data for materials
(a) Cement used : OPC 53
(b) Specific gravity of cement : 3.15
(c) Specific gravity of Silica fume : 2.20
(d) Specific gravity of
a. Coarse aggregate : 2.74
b. Fine aggregate : 2.65
c. Chemical admixture : 0.5%
(e) Water absorption
a. Coarse aggregate : 0.5 %
b. Fine aggregate : 1.0 %
(f) Moisture content
a. Coarse aggregate : Nil
b. Fine aggregate : Nil

Step-3
Target strength for mix proportioning
f ‘ck= f ck + X
f ‘ck= 85 + 8 = 93 N/mm2
or
f ‘ck= f ck + 1.65 X S
f ‘ck= 85 + 1.65 X 6 = 94.9 N/mm2
From table 2 (IS 10262:2019)
The higher value is adopted.
Therefore, target strength will be 94.9 N/mm2

Step-4

Approximate air content

From table 3 (IS 10262:2019)
The approximate amount of entrapped air to be expected in normal concrete is
0.5% 20mm maximum size aggregate

Step-5

Selection of water content ratio

From table 8 (IS 10262 :2019)
Water cement ratio is 0.26 for target strength 94.9 N/mm2
0.26<0.45 (hence ok)

Step-6
Selection of water content
From table 4 (IS 10262:2019)
Estimate water content for 50mm slump = 186 kg
As hyper plasticizer is used in the water content may be reduced on the trail
data the water content reduction of 40% is considered,
= 186 X 0.60
= 112 kg

Step-7
Calculation of cement content
Water-cement ratio =0.27
Cement content = 112/0.26
= 431 kg/m3
Cementitious material content = 431 kg/m3 + 10% X 431
= 474 kg/m3
GGBFS @ 30% of cementitious material content = 474 X 30%
= 142 kg/m3
Silica fume @ 10% of cementitious material content = 474 X 10%
= 47.4 kg/m3

Cement (OPC) = 474 – 142 – 47.4 = 271.2 kg/m3

Check for minimum cementitious material content
241 kg/m3 < 452 kg/m3 (hence ok)
Revised w/c ratio = 112/474 = 0.236

Step-8
Proportioning of volume of coarse aggregate and fine aggregate
content
From table 10 (IS 10262:2019)
Volume of coarse aggregate corresponding to 20mm w/c ration is 0.3 = 0.66
Present case 0.236 as the water content cement ratio is lowered by 0.064 ( at
rate of 0.01m3 for every + or – 0.05 change in w/c ratio)
(0.01 X 0.064)/0.05 = 0.013
Corrected volume of coarse aggregate for w/c ratio of 0.0227
= 0.66+0.011
= 0.671m3
Volume of fine aggregate = 1- 0.671 = 0.329m3

Step-9

Mix calculation
(a) Total volume = 1m3
(b) Volume of entrapped air in wet concrete = 0.005m3
(c) Volume of cement = (Mass of cement / Specific gravity of cement) X
(1/1000)
= (300/3.15) X (1/1000)
= 0.077m3
(d) Volume of GGBFS = (Mass of GGBFS / Specific gravity of GGBFS)
X (1/1000)
= (142/3) X (1/1000)
= 0.047m3
(e) Volume of Silica fume = (Mass of Silica fume / Specific gravity of
Silica fume) X (1/1000)
= (47.4/2.2) X (1/1000)
= 0.022m3

(f) Volume of water = (Mass of water / Specific gravity of water) X

(1/1000)
= (112/1) X (1/1000)
= 0.112m3
(g) Volume of chemical admixture = (Mass of chemical admixture /
Specific gravity of chemical admixture) X (1/1000)
= ((474 X 1%)/1.08) X (1/1000)
= 0.00438m3
(h) Volume of total aggregate
= [(a-b) – (c+d+e+f+g)]
= [(1-0.005) – (0.077+0.047+0.022+0.112+0.00438)]
= 0.733 m3
(i) Mass of coarse aggregate = g X Volume of coarse aggregate X
Specific gravity of coarse aggregate X 1000
= 0.733 X 0.674 X 2.74 X 1000
=1353.67 kg
As this is a pumpable concrete the values is reduced by 10% in
case of coarse aggregate.
Decreased by 10% = 1217 kg
(j) Mass of fine aggregate = g X Volume of fine aggregate X Specific
gravity of fine aggregate X 1000
= 0.733 X 0.326 X 2.65 X 1000
= 690 kg
As this is a pumpable concrete the values is increased by 10% in
case of fine aggregate.
Increased by 10% = 767 kg
Step-10

Mix proportions for trail number 1

Cement = 241 kg/m3
GGBFS = 142 kg/m3
Water = 126 kg/m3
Silica fume = 47 kg/m3
Fine aggregate = 767 kg
Coarse aggregate = 1211 kg
Chemical admixture = 4.74 kg/m3
Free w/c ratio = 0.236
