Value: 30% of total assessment
Marks: Marked out of 100
Assessment Mode: Group and Individual Assessment

RATIONALE

This assignment has been designed to allow students to test and demonstrate their understanding
and ability to explain the usages of networking software, set up a simple virtual local area
network, and trace data packets sent. Upon completion of this coursework, students will be able
to:

 CLO3: Perform a variety of networking tasks in a group.

CASE STUDY

Students are required to use CISCO packet tracer to create a virtual network which consists
of a few departments in HELP university. They are the Student Department, IT Department, HR
Department, and Marketing Department. Students need to assign IP address, create virtual LAN,
and set some security rules to permit or block certain access into specific network or services.
The detailed requirements are as the following:

a. Every department has its own server to be served as DNS, DHCP, FTP, and HTTP server.
b. The HR Department and Marketing Department share the same switch to connect to a
router, while the Student Department has its own switch to connect to the switch shared by
the two departments.
c. The IT Department has its own switch to connect to another router because this department
is in a different building. This router has an interface to connect to public internet, and an
interface connecting to the router used by HR, Student and Marketing Department.
d. Each department has its own VLAN in the switch.
e. The Student Department’s server DHCP service must be able to assign IP addresses for at
least 15000 students through wireless service. Assuming all students share the same login
for wireless access point.
f. The rest of the departments must have at least one printer, and three desktops.
g. VTP concept is applied in the campus network. The switch used by HR and marketing
departments connecting to the router is configured as VTP server while the switch used by
student department is configured as VTP client.
h. Trunking protocol is applied to the campus network to reduce the number of cables used.
i. All users in the university are ONLY allowed to open any web sites from public internet,
except IT department users can connect to public internet for all purposes.
j. Public users are ONLY allowed to open web sites from the IT department and cannot
access any other department’s network.
k. All departments’ users are NOT allowed to access each other department’s network.
l. HR and Marketing Departments’ users are ONLY allowed to perform HTTP, and FTP
services with IT department’s server.
m. The Student Department’s users are ONLY allowed to open web sites from the IT
Department’s server.
n. The IT Department’s server can perform any services to other departments’ server and
desktops with port number greater than 10.

TASKS
1. Solve the case study in the previous page using CISCO packet tracer.
2. Refer to marking scheme on the mark’s allocation for individual marks and group marks.
3. Create a table to show all end devices’ IP address, subnet mask, default gateway.
4. Create a table to show all network devices’ interfaces IP address, and subnet mask.
5. Create a table to show the first usable IP address, last usable IP address, and IP address
range for each subnet.
6. Solve this task separately from the existing project in another CISCO file. If you are
given an IP address of 192.168.10.0/16 to be reserved for the local area network
connecting to a router through a switch, how many bits (MOST MINIMUM) would you
borrow from host bits and perform subnetting to form three different smaller subnets in
the same physical LAN? How many users can be supported in each LAN? Justify your
answer with all detailed calculations and create a new CISCO packet tracer file for this
specific LAN.

SUBMISSION CHECK LIST

i. Submit your report to Turnitin submission link first. Then, submit the Turnitin report and
packet tracer softcopies together in a compressed file to the link in LMS. Make sure the
compressed file contains the following items.
