Exercise 6
Hypothesis Testing Concerning Two Samples
Instruction: Answer the following questions based on the R outputs. Write the hypothesis, the
test to use, decision rule, decision, and conclusion.

1. An educator wants to compare the performance of students who used a traditional

learning method versus those who used a new digital learning tool. The test scores of 10
students who used the traditional method are: 75, 80, 78, 82, 77, 74, 79, 81, 76, 80. The
test scores of 10 students who used
the digital tool are: 85, 88, 84, 86, 87, 85, 89, 86, 88, 87. Test if there is a significant
difference in mean scores between the two groups using a two-sample t-test at a 5%
significance level.

Hypotheses: Ho: μ1 = μ2 vs. Ha: μ1 ≠ μ2 (claim)

Test Statistic: Two Independent Samples t-test

Decision Rule: Reject Ho if p-value < α=0.05

Decision: Since 0.0000004895 < 0.05, we reject Ho.

Conclusion: At 0.05 level of significance, there is enough evidence to support the

claim that there is significant difference in mean scores between the
traditional learning method and new digital learning tool.

2. A teacher wants to test if a review session before the second exam improves student
performance. The pre-test and post-test scores for 9 students are:
a. Pre-test: 60, 62, 58, 61, 59, 60, 63, 64, 65
b. Post-test: 68, 70, 67, 69, 66, 68, 72, 73, 71
Test if the review session significantly improved student performance using a paired t-test at
a 5% significance level.

Hypotheses: Ho: μ1 = μ2 vs. Ha: μ1 ≠ μ2 (claim)

Test Statistic: Two Dependent Samples t-test

Decision Rule: Reject Ho if p-value < α=0.05

Decision: Since 0.000000009682 < 0.05, we reject Ho.
Conclusion: At 0.05 level of significance, there is enough evidence to support the
claim that the review session significantly improved the student
performance in the second exam.

3. A school implemented a tutoring program and wants to assess its effectiveness. The test
scores of 10 students who participated in the tutoring program are: 90, 85, 88, 87, 91,
89, 92,
88, 90, 87. The test scores of 10 students who did not participate are: 78, 80, 76, 79, 77,
75, 78, 80, 77, 76. Use the Wilcoxon rank-sum test to test if there is a significant difference in
scores between the two groups at a 5% significance level.

Hypotheses: Ho: There is no significant difference in scores between the two groups.
Ha: There is a significant difference in scores between the two groups. (claim)

Test Statistic: Wilcoxon Rank-Sum Test

Decision Rule: Reject Ho if p-value < α=0.05

Decision: Since 0.0001756 < 0.05, we reject Ho.

Conclusion: At 0.05 level of significance, there is enough evidence to support the

claim that there is a significant difference in the scores between the two
groups.

4. A researcher wants to compare student feedback ratings on two different teaching

methods used in a class. The ratings (on a scale of 1 to 10) for 8 students for Method A
are: 8, 7, 9, 10, 6,
8, 9, 7. The ratings for Method B are: 6, 5, 7, 8, 4, 6, 7, 5. Determine if there is a
significant difference in student feedback ratings between the two teaching methods.

Hypotheses: Ho: There is no significant difference in student feedback ratings between

the two teaching methods.
Ha: There is a significant difference in student feedback ratings between the
two teaching methods. (claim)

Test Statistic: Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test

Decision Rule: Reject Ho if p-value < α=0.05

Decision: Since 0.005962 < 0.05, we reject Ho.

Conclusion: At 0.05 level of significance, there is enough evidence to support the

claim that there is a significant difference in student feedback ratings
between the two teaching methods.
