Discursive Writing

Is technology in school a bad thing? Throughout the past few decades technology has
evolved in our schooling system up until the point of school staff requiring new rules to ban
or regulate the amount of technology used. Technology serves students in many ways like
the internet and creating a seamless environment for students and teachers to keep their
education successful. Although technology can assist students and teachers, it’s become a
large distraction for students, also the technology can affect the social area of a student’s
life.

The internet allows students to access millions of websites with the tap of a finger. This
grants access to learning without having to speak to a teacher or read a book and has
become essential in the education industry due to its reliable answers on anything. Also, if a
teacher doesn’t know the answer to a question, internet will always be there to help.

The impact of technology on student’s focus can be a large problem for the teachers
because they have to waste time dealing with student’s misbehaviour, causing the class to
lose valuable time that they could be educated in. It has also been proven to lower attention
spans in children which can impact their learning even when they don’t have their laptops
and phones. The loss of focus can be detrimental to the learning of children and their overall
education.

Another upside to technology in the classroom and at home can be the seamless
environment that children and teachers can use to contact each other. During the Covid-19
pandemic these features were used for hours every day and allowed children to continue
their education from the comfort of their own home, saving almost a year of nearly lost
education to children worldwide. Without that year the kids could have been set back a year
from graduating or cause an extremely large gap in their learning and knowledge.

Technology has already caused harm to young people’s social life and continues to destroy
them while kids stay inside playing online games and eventually stop leaving the house to
see their friends. Social media is the closest alternative to interacting with people outside
and it cannot simulate a proper interaction with a real human that involves speaking, body
language, facial expressions and the tone in a voice.

Overall, technology has its pros and cons, but at the end of the day technology has brought
qualities to the table that don’t have substitutes and must be used.
