"Technology in Education: Advantages and Disadvantages/Challenges"

I. Introduction

Many tech enthusiasts believe that the constant increase of inventions is reshaping
traditional professions, driving the need for educational system updates. They argue that
relying solely on conventional classroom methods won't adequately prepare students for
real-world challenges, possibly leading to the eventual abandonment of this model.
Critics, on the other hand, caution against hasty integration of modern technology in
classrooms. They highlight potential negative impacts, such social disparities, increasing
mental health issues, and potentially hindering children's academic and cognitive
development. We'll now discuss the pros and cons of tech in education, considering
arguments from both sides, and examine its current impact on students.

II. Andvantages of Technology in Education

A. Access to Information
Mobile devices like phones, tablets, and computers have enabled students to learn
actively and productively, a capability that should have been available earlier. Through
applications, videos, simulations, and digital books, students can approach subjects with
enthusiasm, enhancing the learning experience. This also allows them to explore their
interests, potentially uncovering their passions, talents, and future career paths.

Specific example of Information Access is websites or applications such as

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), e-libraries, and other educational application.
B. Methods of Learning
Technology in education empowers both students and teachers, particularly in
schools embracing hybrid learning. This approach combines synchronous real-time
lessons with asynchronous learning, offering students the flexibility to engage with
content at their own pace. Real-time lessons foster a sense of belonging and social
interaction, same as to face-to-face classes. Meanwhile, self-reliant students with strong
time management skills can choose when to learn independently.

Some example of Technology in education, controlling over their learning

specifically in Asynchronous Learning only, such as Adaptive learning platform, where
students can adapt easily the learning outcomes of that specific platform, and
Personalized content delivery, where students practice of tailoring information, products,
or services based on their preferences, behavior, or characteristics.

The Time for Class 2023 survey, recent published as of the year, June 21,2023.
Found that 31% of students prefer face-to-face instruction over other modes of instruction,
but the remaining 69% prefer fully online, hybrid, or blended learning options.

III. Disadvantages/Challenges of Technology in Education

A. Distraction
Advocates of integrating technology into the classroom frequently fail to take into
account the fact that students continue to use their mobile devices after school.
Particularly, kids have grown accustomed to fast-paced, interesting, and stimulating
content that stimulates their dopamine system since they are frequently exposed to social
media and video games.

The primary issue is the shortening attention spans brought on by regular use of
technological devices. Research suggests that children belonging to Generation Z often
possess an attention span of approximately 8 seconds. Despite the good intentions of
educators, it is best to restrict the usage of non-educational applications and only utilize
technology in the classroom when it is absolutely necessary.

One of the best example of this is Online Games, such as Mobile Legends, Call of
Duty, and other online games application, And also by using Social Media platforms, such
as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Some people particularly students is giving more
time to play and consume their time browsing social medias, than doing school activities.

IV. Conclusion

Diverse opinions exist on the rapid implementation of educational reforms. It's

important to recognize that, in spite of any reservations, the advantages exceed the
disadvantages. Highlighting the drawbacks is an appeal for thoughtful deliberation and
an opportunity to spot flaws in teaching strategies rather than a request to return to the
ways of the past. Schools and teachers have an obligation to evaluate these
disadvantages and improve the quality of instruction in both in-person and virtual
environments.
