DEVELOPMENT
Balancing Today’s Needs with Tomorrow’s
Future
Infrastructure:
Sustainable
Development
• Developement is sustainability means to
balance the needs of the present and future
generations. It is a term introduced by the
Brundtland Report in 1987, but has been
practiced for much longer. The only way to
tackle the challenges of the 21st century-from
climate change and resource scarcity to
economic inequity and social conflict-is
ecological balance married with economic and
social progress: in short we must learn how to
develop that is sustainable.
The Significance of Sustainable Growth
Environmental Significance
• Preserving Natural Resources: Our planet's resources are finite.
Sustainable practices ensure that we use resources like water,
forests, and fossil fuels judiciously.
• Combating Climate Change: Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
through sustainable practices can mitigate the impacts of climate
change.

Waste Management
• Recycling Programs: Encouraging communities to recycle reduces landfill waste and conserves raw materials.
• Innovative Solutions: Companies are developing biodegradable plastics and other eco-friendly materials to
reduce environmental impact.
INSPIRING CASE STUDIES
Costa Rica: Leading the Renewable Energy Revolution Costa Rica generates nearly all
its electricity from renewable sources, including hydro, wind, and geothermal power. This
commitment has positioned the country as a global leader in sustainable energy.
Copenhagen: A Green Urban Oasis Copenhagen aims to become the world's first
carbon-neutral capital by 2025. The city promotes cycling, invests in public transport, and
incorporates green spaces throughout urban areas.
• Role in G20: India engages within the G20 framework to advocate for
policies that support sustainable development goals, emphasizing the
importance of inclusive growth and environmental sustainability.
The Role of Individuals and Communities
Individuals
• Energy Conservation: Simple actions like turning off lights, using energy-
efficient appliances, and reducing car usage make a significant difference.
• Supporting Sustainable Brands: Choosing products from companies that
prioritize sustainability helps drive market demand for green practices.
Communities
• Community Gardens: Local gardening initiatives not only provide fresh
produce but also foster community spirit and environmental stewardship.
• Recycling Programs: Community-driven recycling initiatives can
significantly reduce waste and promote environmental awareness.
