It is a term introduced by the Brundtland Report in 1987, but has been practiced for much longer. The only way to tackle the challenges of the 21st century-from climate change and resource scarcity to economic inequity and social conflict-is ecological balance married with economic and social progress: in short we must learn how to develop that is sustainable.
