Reading comprehension
Read the following passage and then answer the questions : )‫(طلخا‬
When people are playing a game, they need to follow the rules. If they don't, the game becomes
disorganized and unfair. If a student ignores a rule against talking in class, the other students cannot
concentrate. Drivers who do not follow traffic laws can cause serious accidents.
Most things we do are governed by rules. This may be unwritten, like the rules of social politeness, or
official laws passed by parliament and backed up by the legal system. But all rules and laws have the same
purpose – to make it clear what it is right or wrong, and what happens if someone breaks the rule. They are
designed to ensure fairness, safety and respect for other people’s rights, and in this way they help us work,
play and live together peacefully.
If there were no rules and everyone was free to do whatever they wanted, most people would probably
behave selfishly. We need rules to help us get along together and show respect for each other.
Most of us are basically honest and knowing the rules means that we usually try to follow them. One
reason we do this is to avoid punishment , but the strongest argument for following the rules is quite simply
– that it makes the world a better place for all of us.
Choose the correct answer from a, b, c or d :-
1. The best title to the passage is "……………"
a. Traffic rules b. Rules of social politeness
c. The importance of rules d. Showing respect for others

a. They win prizes b. They cause accidents
c. They live peacefully d. They avoid punishment
3. The underlined word ' this ' in the fourth paragraph refers to …………… .

c. the strongest argument d. avoiding punishment
4. One reason for following rules is to avoid …………… .
a. safety b. fairness c. politeness d. punishment
5. The word 'governed' in the second paragraph can be replaced by …………… .
a. written b. designed c. respected d. controlled
6. When people are playing a game, rules are important to ensure …………… and safety.
a. selfishness b. arguments c. fairness d. accidents
7. If there were no rules, most people would probably behave …………… .
a. carefully b. successfully c. safely d. selfishly

Reading comprehension
Read the following passage and then answer the questions : )‫(املنيا‬
Today, millions of people want to learn or improve their English but it is difficult to find the best method.
Is it better to study in Britain or America or to study in your own country? The advantages of going to Britain
seem obvious. Firstly, you will be able to listen to the language all the time you are in the country. You will be
surrounded completely by the language wherever you go. Another advantage is that you have to speak the
language if you are with other people. In Egypt, it is always possible, in the class, to speak Arabic if you want
to and the learning is slower.
On the other hand, there are also advantages to staying at home to study. You don’t have to make big
changes to your life. As well as this, it is also a lot cheaper than going to Britain but it is never possible to
achieve the results of living in the UK. If you have a good teacher in Egypt, I think you can learn in a more
concentrated way than being in Britain without going to a school.
So, in conclusion, I think that if you have enough time and enough money, the best choice is to spend
some time in the UK. This is simply not possible for most people, so being here in Egypt is the
only viable option. The most important thing to do in this situation is to maximize your opportunities: to
speak only English in class and to try to use English whenever possible outside the class.

Read the following passage and then answer the questions : )‫(املطرية‬
Many robots have been sent to Mars. Such robots have usually looked like a box with wheels.
Scientists have been developing a new and unusual kind of robots move like snakes, so they have been
given the name "snakebots." They have the advantage to get into very small spaces, like cracks in
rocks or trees. A snakebot would be much more effective than regular robots with wheels, which easily

22
‫عـافـر شـايـفـك حـاجـة‬ A good education

get stuck or fall over. Since they can carry tools, snakebots would be able to work in space, as well.
They could, for example, help repair the International Space Station.
A snakebot is built like a chain made of about thirty parts, or modules. Each module is basically
the same in that they all have a small computer and a wheel to aid movement. The large computer in
the "head" of the snake makes all of the modules in a snakebot work together. The modular design of
the snakebot has many advantages. If one module fails, another can be added easily. Snakebot
modules can carry different kinds of tools, as well as cameras. Each module can work apart from the
rest if necessary.
Researchers are also trying to develop snakebots made of plastic that can change its shape using
electricity, almost like animal muscles. Snakebots made with this plastic will be very strong and hard
to break. Overall, the snakebot design is much simpler than that of common robots and they will be
much less expensive to build unlike the ordinary robots which are unreliable, extremely expensive,
and they break easily.
Choose the correct answer from a , b , c or d :
1. On of the ………... of " snakebot " is that it can get into the cracks in rocks or trees.
a. advantages b. disadvantages c. demerits d. drawbacks
2. The synonym of the underlined word " aid " is ……….... .
a. resist b. insist c. assist d. persist
3. If something breaks easily, it is called ……….... .
a. tough b. hard c. flexible d. brittle
4. Each module can work ………... if necessary.
a. with others. b. with the thirty parts. c. alone d. hard
5. Regular wheeled-robots get stuck easily and ………... .
a. are able to move b. are unable to move
c. can move d. are able to continue
6. The snakebot consists of ……….... .
a. twenty computers b. one computer
c. thirteen computers d. thirty computers
7. What happens when snakebots are made of plastic?
a. They can control the universe industry. b. They will be popular and inexpensive.
c. Their tails will be easily replaced. d. They can carry heavy loads.

Reading
Read the following passage and then answer the questions : )‫(الوايلي‬
Firefighters are often asked to speak to school and community groups about the importance of fire
safety, particularly fire prevention and detection. Because smoke detectors reduce the risk of dying in a fire by
half, firefighters often provide audiences with information on how to install these protective devices in their
homes.
Specifically, they tell them these things: A smoke detector should be placed on each floor of a home.
While sleeping, people are in particular danger of an emergent fire, and there must be a detector outside
each sleeping area. A good site for a detector would be a hallway that runs between living spaces and
bedrooms.
Because of the dead-air space that might be missed by turbulent hot air bouncing around above a fire,
smoke detectors should be installed either on the ceiling at least four inches from the nearest wall, or high
on a wall at least four, but no further than twelve, inches from the ceiling . Detectors should not be mounted
near windows, exterior doors, or other places where drafts might direct the smoke away from the unit. Nor
should they be placed in kitchens and garages where cooking and gas fumes are likely to cause false alarms.
Choose the correct answer from a, b, c or d:
1. What is the main idea of this passage?
a. How firefighters carry out their responsibilities.
b. The proper installation of home smoke detectors.
c. The detection of dead-air space on walls and ceilings.
d. How smoke detectors prevent fires in homes.

Read the following passage and then answer the questions : )‫(سوهاج‬
The first flags were probably in China. People flew flags in China over 4000 years ago. Each part of
the army had its own flag so the soldiers could see their leaders. Early flags were sticks of wood. They had
pictures cut into the wood. People first made flags of cloth about 2000 years ago.
Those flags looked like today's flags. Flags are important at sea. Most ships fly their own country's flag
and the flag of the country they are visiting. When a ship flies only its own flag, it is ready to fight. Every
country now has a flag. Each group in the pilgrimage flies a special flag to identify each group to its
members. Clubs, teams and schools have flags. The Olympics has a flag. It has five rings of five colours. Each
ring stands for or represents a continent. Railway lines also use flags. They tell the trains what to do. For
example, a red flag means stop. The
white and green flags mean that the train can go. A blue flag means someone is working on the train, nobody
can move the train.

get beef burger in a paper bag. In other places you can pick up a tray of fish, fried chicken, pizza or even
drive your car up to a window and place your order. A few minutes later, a worker passes it to you and you
can drive away.
But why do people prefer fast food restaurants to more comfortable restaurants? Two things make fast food
restaurants popular; speed and price. People may not have time to eat food. The service is fast, so they can
order what they want, eat it and finish it in less than fifteen minutes. Also, prices are inexpensive because of
the large number of meals sold every day in fast food restaurants. Another thing people like is that they can
be sure what the food will taste in those restaurants.
Critics of fast food say that fast food is "Junk Food", as it is the food which is not healthy. It contains too
much salt, carbohydrates, fats and calories which may harm our health. Too much fast food increases the risk

Read the following passage and then answer the questions :
The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health. Though science has made enormous steps
in making food more fit to eat, It has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has
shown that perhaps eighty percent of all human illnesses are related to diet and forty percent of cancer is
related to the diet as well, especially cancer of the colon. Different cultures are more prone to contract certain
illnesses because of the food that is characteristic in these cultures. That food is related to illness is not a new
discovery.
In 1945, government researchers realized that nitrates and nitrites, commonly used to preserve colour in
meats, and other food additives, caused cancer. Yet, these carcinogenic additives remain in our food, and it
becomes more difficult all the time to know which things on the packaging labels of processed food are
helpful or harmful. The additives, which we eat, are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to beef and
poultry, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cows. Sometimes similar drugs
are administered to animals not for medical purposes, but for financial reasons. The farmers are simply trying

57

small flat. But, there were two things of which each was proud! Anne had the longest and most beautiful hair
and Henery possessed a magnificent gold pocket- watch given to him by his father. Anne always noticed
sadly, when he looked at this watch fixed to the buttonhole of his coat by a common old leather strap. He
really needed a gold chain. Hennery often thought if only he could buy her a jeweled comb to hold her long
hair in place.
Now, it was the feast, Henery and Anne began to think what present they could afford to give each other.
Anne had a wonderful idea. She ran down the street to the shop with the notice: “Hair bought”. She entered
and an hour later walked out of the shop richer by five hundred dollars but without her hair. She bought a

Read the following passage and then answer the questions :
Being healthy means being free of disease or injury and able to lead a fulfilling, active life. Many factors
contribute to a person's health including genes, the environment, nutrition, life style and luck. In poor
countries, dirty water and lack of adequate food are among the main causes of poor health. Infectious
diseases such as Malaria and AIDS are also major problems especially in countries that cannot afford modern
drugs and medical equipment. In rich countries, health problems are more often caused by people's life style.
Anything that damages the body or how it works, can be called a disease. Some diseases are caused by
micro-organisms, germs, others by injury or poisons from the body itself. Nearly all diseases can be treated
by modern medicine to some extent. The most common infectious diseases are caused by bacteria and
viruses. Bacteria are single-celled organisms that live outside our cells. They multiply in blood fluids and
wounds. Many are killed with drugs called antibiotics. Viruses are microscopic particles with their own
genetic material. They live in cells and take them over, but cannot survive without them.

B. Reading
Read the following passage and then answer the questions :
Sleep has a powerful influence on our lives. The traditional theory about sleep is that our brain needs
rest for several hours to refresh itself and to "file" in our memory everything that happened to us during the
day. If we are not allowed to sleep, we eventually die.
However Ray Meddis, a scientist at university, has a fascinating new theory. He suggests that we don’t
really have to sleep at all. We sleep only because our brain is "programmed" to make us do so. According to
him, the "tiredness" we feel at the end of the day is produced by a chemical mechanism in the brain which
makes us sleep. We are "programmed" to feel "sleepy" at midnight, even if we have spent the day relaxing or
doing nothing. He believes that the unpleasant symptoms we suffer when we don’t sleep enough are not
because we have not rested but because we disobeyed our brain’s programming. But the believes that if

66
‫عـافـر شـايـفـك حـاجـة‬

scientists could "turn off" the sleep mechanism in our brain, we could live completely normal lives without
sleeping.
So, is sleeping a waste of time? Even Dr. Meddis doesn’t deny the great psychological value of sleep, and
he asks us "If scientists invented a pill which keeps you awake forever, would you take it?”

Read the following passage and then answer the questions :
It is a disgusting fact that many different wild animals throughout the world are in danger. The reasons
for this are many and varied, but we must blame pollution, pesticides the disturbance of animals and their
natural environment and man’s greed.
Industry has grown enormously, and it has become common practice for factories to dispose waste
materials in streams and rivers, causing great loss of river life. Modern agricultural methods include using
pesticides which control insects classified as pests, but which also destroy many that are not. An increase in
population had meant more building which results in the destruction of much of the countryside that

provides shelter for wild animals. To satisfy man’s selfish desires, the polar bear in North America is under
threat, hunted by sportsmen.
Whales are killed for the oil and the food they yield. There are only a few of the species under threat. But
the problem is receiving world-wide recognition, and some actions are being taken. For example, pollution in
the River Thames has been greatly reduced, trading in some furs had been forbidden, and the organisations
like “Friends of the Earth” do valuable work in this field. We should take serious steps to conserve our
environment and protect it from destruction.
