● Christology, derived from “Christ,” referring to Jesus, and “-ology,” meaning “the study
of,” is the study of Jesus as the Christ.
● Christ and Messiah are the same word
Christ (Christos) - Greek New Testament word for Anointed/Anointed one
Messiah (Mashiyach) - Hebrew or Old Testament word for - Anointed/Anointed one
● Christology study both Jesus as a person and the works of Christ. It covers Jesus’
earthly birth, life, death, resurrection, and ascension. and also pertains to His eternal
existence prior to His earthly life. This is the study of divinity and humanity of christ.
Hypostatic Union
because of his unique relationship with god
which has two important parts
1. Jesus is the son of god and so is divine
2. Jesus is god in human form and so is the incarnation of god
combining those two parts jesus is both fully divine and fully human
the bible provides evidence for this belief
romans 1:3-4 who as to his earthly life was a descendant of david and who through the spirit of
holiness was appointed the son of god in power by his resurrection from the dead jesus christ
our lord
we can take note of three things here
1. jesus on earth was fully human with a human ancestor david
2. it was jesus's resurrection that revealed his power and divinity
3. this divinity comes from being the son of god so jesus was both the divine son of god
and the human form of god
Divinity of Jesus Christ
there are two key points to remember about jesus's divinity
1. Birth story
Luke 1:31-32 you will conceive and give birth to a son you ought to call him jesus he will be
great and will be called the son of the most high
the bible tells us that the angel gabriel appeared to mary as god's messenger, gabriel told mary
that she would give birth to the son of god jesus. the birth story shows jesus to be the son of
god through gabriel's message
2. resurrection
Coming back to life is the ultimate proof of jesus divinity
Humanity of Jesus Christ
Incarnation is the belief that jesus is god in human form
there are two big teachings about jesus's humanity
1. Birth Story
shows jesus to be a human but no ordinary human.
at that the gospel of john tells us that through jesus birth god became a human listen to
john 1 14 the word became flesh and made his dwelling among us we have seen his
glory the glory of the one and only son who came from the father full of grace and truth.
this tells us four things
first the word of god is the person of god
second jesus is this word of god made human
third it was during jesus birth that god became alive on earth and incarnation took place
fourth that even with this humanity jesus is glorified because he is the son of god
2. Death
the proof that he was really human
timothy 1 3-16 he appeared in the flesh was believed on in the world was taken up in
glory
first he is god appearing in the flesh as jesus it is this jesus who died on the cross the
line was taken up in glory also tells us that after jesus's human death he was resurrected
and ascended into heaven to be with god again so god became the human jesus on
earth jesus then died on the cross proving his humanity
Significance of Christology to Christians\
Atonement
it allowed jesus to save humanity through his crucifixion. it took both a divine and human
sacrifice for god to forgive the sins of humanity and pave the way for salvation
Leadeship
jesus's divinity and humanity makes him the perfect leader for christians. jesus's humanity
makes him relatable to christians while his divinity makes his teachings and actions inspirational
this combination makes jesus the ideal leader and role model
