THEOLOGY 12

Lesson 1 Introduction
Pastor Richard D. Razon, M.Div., D.CEd.
Definition of Theology:
 Theology is the study of God,
His nature, attributes, character,
abilities, revelation, etc.
 True theology is found in the

Bible which is the self-revelation

of God.
Definition of Theology:
 Theology comes from the 2 Greek words:
◦ THEOS – meaning “GOD”
◦ LOGOS – meaning “ THE WORD” about or the
study of God.

 God is revealed in the scriptures.

 Even though our attempts to understand

and infinite God will fall short because of

our limited understanding.
Definition of Theology:
"The God of Christian theology is the OT God,
the Father of Jesus Christ, and the word is the
divine Word which became flesh in Jesus Christ.
Jesus, as witnessed to in the Holy Scriptures, is
the revelation of all God’s ways and works with
humanity.
Christian theology, therefore, is concerned not
with human words and thoughts about a god,
but with all God’s creative and redemptive ways
and works with humanity in Jesus Christ."
(Bromiley, Geoffrey W., ed. The International
Standard Bible Encyclopedia, Revised. Wm. B.
Eerdmans, 1979–1988.)
What is
the
Trinity?
What is the Trinity?
 The word "trinity" is not found in the Bible,
but this does not mean that the concept is
not taught there.  The word "bible" is not
found in the Bible either, but we use it
anyway.
 God exists as a unity of three distinct

persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

 Each of the three persons is related to the

other two but are distinct from them.

What is the Trinity?

• Monarchianism: Failure to hold that there
are three Persons who are equally God.
• Modalism: God is an actor who plays three
different parts.

LORD revealed
Himself to Samuel at
Shiloh by the word of
2 Timothy 3:16-17
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God,
and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for
correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect,
throughly furnished unto all good works.
Theology:
 Through Theology we learn that God has
revealed Himself to humanity through His Son
Jesus Christ and that through His blood we
have eternal life.
 In our lives, we must understand Theology in

order to give a life of obedience.

 How can we love God if we don’t know Him.
 How can we obey God if we don’t know Him.
Theology:
 As we get to know God better through
reading His Word, our lives are immeasurably
enriched by the comforts and hope that He
imparts to those who know.
 Poor Theology and a superficial or inaccurate

understanding of God will make our lives

worse instead of bringing comfort and hope
we long for.
 Without Theology we have no direction about

who God is and what He does. And we waste

our lives and lose our souls.
Theology:
 ALL CHRISTIANS should be pre-occupied
with Theology – personal study of God.
CHRISTOLOGY
Pastor Richard D. Razon, M.Div.,
D.CEd.
Christology
 The term “christology” (from
Greek christos meaning “anointed one”
or “Christ”) refers to the study of Christ.
 It often includes such topics as the
preexistence and eternality of Christ, OT
prophecies about Christ, Christ’s
humanity, deity, and incarnation, as well
as the issue of his temptations and
sinlessness, his death, resurrection,
ascension and exaltation, return, three-
fold office, and states.
The Preexistence of Christ

 There are several texts in the NT that

speak in one way or another to the
preexistence of Christ. John says the
“word” became flesh which implies that
he had existed previous to his
incarnation (John 1:1, 14).
 So also when he says that Christ was
“rich,” but then became “poor,” that he
was “in the form of God,” but “humbled
himself,” that he was “before all things”
(Col 1:17).
Prophecies About Christ

Some of the familiar ones include: his birth (Gen

3;15; Gal 4:4); his lineage (Gen 49:10; Luke
3:33); his place of birth (Micah 5:2; Luke 2:4-7);
his Galilean ministry of compassion and
judgment (Isa 9:1-2; Matt 4:14-16); that he was
the prophet to come (Deut 18:15, 18-19; Acts
3:20, 22); that he would function as a priest
(Psalm 110:4; Heb 5:5-6); his betrayal (Psalm
41:9; Luke 22:47-48); his being sold for thirty
pieces of silver (Zech 11:11-12; Matt 26:15;
27:1-10); his violent death (Zech 12:10; John
20:27); his resurrection (Psalm 16:10; Luke
24:7; Acts 2:25-28); his exaltation to God’s right
The Humanity of Christ
There are several lines of evidence in the
Scripture which converge to prove that from a
Biblical point of view Jesus was truly and
thoroughly human. Jesus had human names
(i.e., Jesus, Son of David), was experienced by
others as a human being (John 9:16), had a
body (1 John 1:1), spoke normal human
language(s), referred to himself as a man (John
8:40); others referred to him as a man (Acts
3:22); experienced life as a human being (Luke
2:52), including such limitations as hunger (Matt
4:2), thirst (John 19:28), tiredness (John 4:6),
intense sorrow and distress (John 11:35; Luke
The Deity of Christ
There are also several lines of evidence in Scripture
which converge to prove that the Biblical writers
regarded Jesus as human, but as more than human as
well. They considered him divine. John says he was
divine or God (John 1:1). Paul says he is the “very form
of God” (morphe theou;Phil 2:6) as well as our great
God and savior (Titus 2:13). He is referred to as Lord
(Matt 2:43-45), Yahweh (cf. Rom 10:9, 13 and Joel
2:32) as well as the King of Kings (a designation a Jew
such as John would only give God himself—Rev 19:16).
He does the works of God, including creating (John
1:3; Col. 1:15-20), sustaining (Heb 1:3-4), saving (Matt
1:23), raising the dead (John 5:25); judging (John
5:27), sending the Spirit (a work assigned to the father
as well; see John 14:26; 15:26), and building his church

The revelation
of the person
of Christ
To have First hand
revelations:
1. For revelations to become first hand God
must give us a seeing eye and a hearing
ear. –Prov.20:12
2. God has to favour us by unfolding to us
the things that are hidden. –Prov.25:2
3. You must know that it is a revelation that
will bring you into your inheritance and
destiny. – Deut.29:29
4. The power of meditation will make a
second hand revelation first hand
revelation. – Joshua 1:5
Thou art the Christ, the
Son of the living God.
– Matthew 16:16
The revelation of the person of Christ

1. THOU ART
 He is ever present always near; ever

relevant; always available.

 He is a God in need – He is the Great “I am”

 He is a God in time - He is the God who was,

who is and who is to come.

 He is a God in deed – He is the Great

Jehovah.
 He is a God in covenant and purpose – The

God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

 His counsel is from generation to generation.
The revelation of the person of Christ

1. THOU ART
 His plans and purposes do not change.

 He is God who will manifest in sons –

“Our Father who art in heaven”

 God is going to speak through sons.

When the Son spoke, the words were

fulfilled immediately.
The revelation of the person of Christ

2. THE CHRIST
 His sacrifice is complete.

 His work is complete.

 He broke sickness, the curse, etc, it was

laid to rest for once and for all.

 We must live by the standard of Christ

and not by the doctrines of man.

 No works of the enemy can prevail.
The revelation of the person of Christ

3. THE SON
 He is the model Son.

 He is the firstborn Son.

 Every other son must become like this –

Heb.12:5-6
And you have forgotten that word of
encouragement that addresses you as sons:
"My son, do not make light of the Lord's
discipline,
and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and
he punishes everyone he accepts as a son."
The revelation of the person of Christ

3. THE SON
 Discipline - to put a pattern that will

regulate the life an values of the person

to please the one disciplining. We are not
just correcting, we are training and
education, placing a pattern into their
life.
 Scourge – to remove anything that is not

inside the mould/pattern of the Son.

 The job of the father is to build patterns.

–Philippians 3:15-17
The revelation of the person of Christ

3. THE SON
Philippians 3:15-17
15 All of us who are mature should take
such a view of things. And if on some point
you think differently, that too God will make
clear to you.
16 Only let us live up to what we have
already attained.
17 Join with others in following my example,
brothers, and take note of those who live
according to the pattern we gave you.
The revelation of the person of Christ

3. THE SON
 When God looks at me He sees the

image of the first born.

Romans 8:29
For those God foreknew he also
predestined to be conformed to the
likeness of his Son, that he might be the
firstborn among many brothers.
The revelation of the person of Christ

3. THE SON
 Everything that Jesus is, is what we will become.

Hebrews 2
10 In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that
God, for whom and through whom everything
exists, should make the author of their salvation
perfect through suffering.
11 Both the one who makes men holy and those
who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus
is not ashamed to call them brothers.
12 He says, "I will declare your name to my
brothers; in the presence of the congregation I will
sing your praises."
The revelation of the person of Christ

3. THE SON
 Everything that Jesus is, is what we will become.

Hebrews 2
13 And again, "I will put my trust in him." And
again he says, "Here am I, and the children God
has given me."
14 Since the children have flesh and blood, he too
shared in their humanity so that by his death he
might destroy him who holds the power of death
— that is, the devil— 15 and free those who all
their lives were held in slavery by their fear of
death.
The revelation of the person of Christ

3. THE SON
 The devil is powerless, because the

people don’t fear death anymore.

 That is why the people can overcome the

devil because they don’t love their life

even unto death.
The revelation of the person of Christ

4. THE LIVING
 He is the LIFE.

 Apart from Him there is no life. Life

without Christ is called the life of the

flesh.
 The life I live I no longer live, but Christ

in me –Galatians 2:20
The revelation of the person of Christ

5. THE GOD
 There is no other beside Him.

 He is the Almighty God, the Great I am.

 There is nobody in His league.

 He is the God of all creation.

1 Timothy 2:1-7
I urge, then, first of all, that requests,
prayers, intercession and thanksgiving
be made for everyone—
2 for kings and all those in authority,
that we may live peaceful and quiet
lives in all godliness and holiness.
3 This is good, and pleases God our
Savior,
4 who wants all men to be saved and to
come to a knowledge of the truth.
1 Timothy 2:1-7
5 For there is one God and one
mediator between God and men, the
man Christ Jesus,
6 who gave himself as a ransom for all
men — the testimony given in its
proper time.
7 And for this purpose I was appointed
a herald and an apostle — I am telling
the truth, I am not lying — and a
teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles.
