Foreword
Entering this home in Gujarat, feels like
stepping into a harmonious blend of
modern architecture and natural beauty.
The sloping roofs and sturdy brick and
concrete structures are not just visually
striking but integrate seamlessly with the
lush landscape.
Inside, the spaces are a perfect mix of
traditional and contemporary design,
with marble floors, wooden rafters, and
elegant mosaic accents. The home’s
thoughtful layout accommodates a
multi-generational family, offering seven
identical bedrooms and easy transitions
between indoor and outdoor areas,
including existing amenities like pools
and sports clubs.
The connection to nature is palpable,
with large windows and courtyards
providing stunning views of greenery and
majestic mango trees. The courtyards, in
particular, serve as serene focal points,
bringing natural light and fresh air into
the home.
This house is more than just a residence;
it’s a sanctuary where thoughtful design
and nature coexist, offering a peaceful
and enriching living experience for all

Project Context
In the heart of Gujarat, amidst abundant greenery, stands a bungalow that epitomizes the seamless
fusion of architectural innovation, landscape harmony, and familial intimacy. Crafted by architect
Hiren Patel of HPA, this residence showcases a blend of contemporary living and the serene beauty
of its environment. Tailored to cater to the diverse needs of a multi-generational family, every corner
of the space is designed for comfort and practicality. A central goal of the project was to forge a
balanced relationship between the built structure and the natural landscape. By embracing the
local topography and flora, the design nurtures a deep connection with nature, fostering peace and
well-being for all residents.

Ground Floor
The built structure, spanning nearly 23,000 sq. ft., is centered around three courtyards. These
courtyards, brimming with lush greenery, ensure that the occupants are constantly immersed in
nature, providing a tranquil living environment. The house is designed on a single floor, featuring a
central living room alongside a private family room. Essential spaces like the dining area and kitchen
are also included. Seven bedrooms, all following the same modular design, are arranged around the
periphery. A swimming pool at the entrance enhances the overall serenity of the space. Every room
offers views both outward and inward toward the courtyards and surrounding landscape.

Entryway & Foyer
The entrance to the house features an intriguing circular roundabout, providing a convenient spot
for cars to halt. This roundabout is strategically placed away from the main house, allowing visitors
to enjoy a scenic pathway leading up to the home, surrounded by beautiful landscape elements.
Upon reaching the main entrance, a large foyer with sloping roofs warmly welcomes guests inside.
From the foyer, one can catch glimpses of the various spaces waiting to be explored within the home

Pooja
Upon entering the home, directly in front of the main door, one encounters an extravagant
pooja room. Adorned in white, this serene space immediately instills a sense of peace in visitors.
The background of the pooja area features intricately carved marble that gleams under the soft
illumination from behind. The room is thoughtfully kept uncluttered for daily use, yet its grandeur
imbues a distinctly Indian essence into the space.

Living Room
Beyond the pooja space lies a central living and play area adjacent to an open-to-sky courtyard. This
living space stands out with its sloping roofs and wooden patterned floor. It offers ample seating
under a large chandelier, the focal point of the room. Furniture pieces and elements in shades of
white and grey complement the wooden flooring, enhancing the space’s serene ambiance. Exposed
wooden rafters in the ceiling add a touch of old-world charm. Wainscoting on the walls and large
windows opening into the courtyard create seamless partitions between different areas. This living
room is constantly bathed in light from the adjacent courtyard, ensuring that occupants are always
connected to the surrounding landscape and waterscape.

Dining Space
Towards the south of the house lies a spacious dining area, perfect for accommodating an entire
party. At the center of the room stands a large wooden dining table with legs featuring a golden
metallic base. The table is surrounded by olive green chairs that beautifully complement the
outdoor greenery. Artwork that harmonizes with the color palette of white, green, wood, and the
vibrant nature outside adorns the walls. A custom-made decorative light fixture hangs directly
above the dining table, drawing attention to it. The white marble flooring, white walls, and white
ceiling contribute to an aura of peace and cleanliness throughout the space.

Kitchen
Adjacent to the dining space is a clean and minimal kitchen designed for functionality and style.
It follows the same material palette of white flooring, walls, and ceiling, but stands out with the
addition of greys. A central multipurpose island and kitchen cabinets in shades of grey provide
striking contrast. The central island serves as a versatile workspace for the entire cooking process
and also features an edge that functions as a quick breakfast table with high chairs. The kitchen is
designed to be clutter-free and fully utilitarian, ensuring smooth and efficient activities.

Southern Verandah
A verandah extending towards the south connects the dining and kitchen areas. Covered by a
sloping roof, this verandah serves dual purposes as both a leisure space and an outdoor dining
area. The interior of the sloping roof is lined with veneer, creating a warm ambiance, while the
exterior is adorned with Mangalore tiles, adding a traditional touch to the space. Opening out into
the expansive landscaped area surrounding it, this verandah invites a seamless transition between
indoor comfort and outdoor natural beauty.

Family Room
A family room towards the southeast provides a comfortable and cozy space exclusive to family
members. Furnished with a large continuous sofa running along three edges of the room, the
furniture maintains a consistent palette of white and greys, complementing the patterned wooden
flooring. The ceiling is simple and minimal, featuring a white sloping false ceiling. This design
approach ensures a harmonious blend of all elements. The space is bathed in natural light from
multiple large windows, offering occupants an engaging view of the surrounding lush vegetation.

Central Courtyard
At the heart of the house lies a large open-to-sky courtyard, inspired by royal gardens. It features
a central seating area surrounded by water bodies on all sides, creating a serene and elegant
atmosphere. A stepping stone pathway connects every room of the house to this central space,
enhancing its accessibility and appeal. The courtyard is adorned with Champa trees bearing pink
flowers, adding vibrant color. To further brighten the space, sculptures in shades of electric blue are
strategically placed around the courtyard. These elements, set amidst lush greenery, truly enliven
the entire area, making it one of the favorite spots in the house.

Bedroom
All the bedrooms in the house follow a similar modular design. The central space is dedicated to the
sleeping area, while one edge of the room features a cozy niche, perfect for catching up on a book
or enjoying nature with a cup of tea. In this particular bedroom, the design is minimal yet lively. The
patterned wooden floor complements the white color palette, adding warmth to the space. Various
textures are explored in the room’s furnishings, enhancing its aesthetic appeal. Views of the lush
greenery outside further complement the material palette, making the room feel both lively and
blissful.

Bedroom
This bedroom follows a similar palette of white and wood. The centerpiece is a minimalist four-poster
wooden bed that complements the patterned wooden flooring and smaller furniture elements. The
furnishings incorporate a touch of rust orange to harmonize with the wood tones. A cozy niche is
also designed to offer a perfect spot to look out into the surrounding landscape, enhancing the
room’s connection with nature.

Kids’ Bedroom
The daughter’s bedroom is designed with a charming touch of pink. At the center is a cozy bed with
steps on the side leading to an elevated area above the bed where she can play and rest. Beneath
the steps is a storage space with ample shelves to accommodate her books and toys. The flooring
matches the other bedrooms with patterned wood. The attached bathroom also features shades of
pink in the backsplash of the vanity unit, creating a cohesive and delightful design. This entire room
is thoughtfully dedicated to the daughter and all her needs.

Swimming Pool
The swimming pool near the entrance of the house is a large, inviting pool adjacent to a gazebo. One
can relax and rejuvenate under the gazebo’s sloping roof or take a dip in the pool at sunset, making
the most of this serene space. Surrounded by lush greenery on all sides, this area offers a sense of
being outdoors while maintaining privacy, adding to the overall charm of the home.
