BELAKU - TECHNOARCHITECTURE
This contemporary residence in the urban landscape of Bengaluru
is read as an ensemble of geomtery formed of cubes and volumes
with a touch of rustic material palette. The design of the Belaku
highlights a cantilevering cubical mass and the seamless connection
that the structure has with the surroundings. The straight lines of
the architecture stay in jarring contrast to the neighbourhood, yet a
simple, elegant, visual solution the home is organized in splits.

The concept that client had in mind was of Wabi Sabi - aesthetic, simple, and close
to nature; celebrating the beauty of a naturally imperfect world. This home provides
simplicity and yet it is visually rich in creating a harmony of natural materials. The
planning and the material choices for the interiors and exteriors, evolves from
understanding the client’s lifestyle, their roots and the landscape where the house sits.
These direct the porus nature of the house that is solid as well as lets the spaces breath
the fresh air.

For ease of movement in the spaces, lift and the stairs are provided and positioned
strategically positioned. A spiral staircase in the front of the home before the main door
states an ambiguity and premise of the house. The entrance to the house itself is a
“pause - mediating the inside and outside”.

The house is designed as duplex, for a family consisting of two generations. The 2BHK
home is designed for the elderly couple and other home is designed to sever the sons
who shuttles between New York and Bangalore on a regular basis. Both the spaces are
designed keeping in mind the user preferences, habits, and comforts needed considering
the varying age group.

Living Room
Internally the house is designed in the form of an open plan layout which has a huge
void in the centre that acts as a courtyard with a waterbody. This central setting that
divides the houses yet keeps it united in a strategic way, also marks the integration
of the traditional concept of the homes with a central courtyard as an architectural
aesthetic.

The living room is bright and scantily dressed with furniture. The light coming in from
the large window and from the courtyard, enlivens the space. The waterbody in the
courtyard adds coolness in the space.

The kitchen on the opposite side of the courtyard, makes the user experience beautiful
and comforting. The ground and first levels are kept as semi-private and public spaces
with the facilities of bedrooms, kitchen, dining, family living room, library and a pooja
room. While, the second floor is planned for accommodating guests and also has a
library and a multipurpose room.

The entire house receives abundant light and air from the intentionally placed openings
keeping the house in a constant connect with the elements of nature. What enhances
the earthy feel of the house is the choice of its materials and textures.

Solid IPE wooden screen sandwiched between metal flats in the elevation gives an
opportunity for occupation and cover against the harsh sun. The entire flooring is a
right combination of cement finish tiles and solid walnut wooden strips. The corten
steel feature on the faced acts as an excellent variation to the wood and concrete colours
which are already used commonly. The design brings a flavour of quirkiness, but in a
subtle way. The use of colours and artwork helps the overall narrative and is further
supported by the super-imposed neutral colour palette.

All the materials emphasize the beauty and poetic imperfection of nature. Walls and
floor, partially in pigmented cement plaster, mimic the home into the landscape while
the wood in the ceiling adds the required warmth to the space.
