Thesis Synopsis (23-24)
1. INTRODUCTION
A Hospital is a Residential establishment, which provides short term and long term medical care
consisting of observational, diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitative services for persons suffering
or suspected to be suffering from a disease or injury and for parturient. It may or may not also
provide services for ambulatory patients on an out-patient basis (WHO Expert Committee, 1993).
The Hospital is an integral part of a social and medical organization, then function of which is to
provide for the population complete healthcare, both curative and preventive, and whose out-
patient service reach out to the family in its home environment; the hospital is also a Centre for the
Training of health workers and for Bio-social Research.
A hospital is a health care institution providing patient treatment with specialized medical and
nursing staff and medical equipment. The best-known type of hospital is the general hospital, which
typically has an emergency department to treat urgent health problems ranging from fire and
accident victims to a sudden illness. A district hospital typically is the major health care facility in its
region, with many beds for intensive care and additional beds for patients who need long-term care.
Specialized hospitals include trauma centers, rehabilitation hospitals, children's hospitals, seniors'
(geriatric) hospitals, and hospitals for dealing with specific medical needs such as psychiatric and
certain disease categories.
Hospital is the most visible face of healthcare industry. It provides a platform where the practitioners
of medicine integrate the healthcare technology with the living process. They can be grouped by
various classifications like ownership, type of systems, etc. but they all are planned to provide a layer
of health care, which ordinarily cannot be provided at home.
Multispecialty hospitals deals with basic medical, and surgical, etc. They provide primary and
secondary care services. Each department of hospital needs its own identity within its own private
semi-private and public amenities, this makes planning a complex proposition. Apart from that, in
today's hospital, engineering department and technical support have assumed greatest ever
importance. Hospitals are amongst the largest and most complex of all modern institutions. Hospital
architecture is a part of this complexity. Unlike other organizations, which may be built in various
ways, hospital building has lesser choice. Medical architecture must facilitate the adoption of new
technologies besides contributing to the efficiency and transparency of process. It must provide a
seamless integration of clinical requirements with building planning and designing issues.
This project considers the category of General Hospitals, Non-Government i.e. Private hospital, short
stay hospital (stay around 30days), medium scale hospital (300-500 beds), Regional hospital. The
location of the proposed hospital can be cities like Surat, Indore, Raipur, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Pune,
etc. or similar scale cities.
The proposed Multi-Specialty Hospital will serve to the Medical Departments like General surgery,
Medical & Surgical oncology, Pediatrics, Ophthalmology, Diabetology, Cardiology & cardio-vascular
Surgery, Physiotherapy, Neonatology, Gynecology & Obstetrics, Anesthesiology, Orthopedics and
Radiology.
