What’s New

A poem is shared to you. This poem crafted by Brent Lalao, 11-years old,
of Solomon Islands.

Read and analyze the poem below. Answer the following questions in a
separate sheet of paper

MORE THAN A KISS

We need peace
That’s more than a kiss
It sails the seas
Like a swarm of bees
We’ll shout for joy
Like a laughing boy
Peace is what we need
And we must take the lead
To show others a good
Example not be rude
We must have good attitude
As in harmony with kiss
We must have peace
That’s more than a kiss
Many are suffering
Around the world
They want peace
That will bring out love
That will change people’s hearts
To good from bad
We must have peace
Like a growing tree needs water
1. In the first 6 lines of the poem, what is peace likened to ? What does
it bring?
2. In the 7th-12th lines, what are expected of us to take and to
possess as peace-loving person?
3. If we bring peace, how that transforms people’s hearts ?

Below is the snippet of the poem More Than A Kiss

Peace is what we need

And we must take the lead
To show others a good
Example not be rude
We must have good attitude

We take this challenge that in showing good examples to others Filipinos

What Is It

Are the people mentioned above just helping

as helping without any participatory tools?
What participatory tools we are using?
Don’t you worry, I will present to you the participatory tools as you enter
into community engagement resulting in community development through
solidarity.

In this discussion, the concept of community organizing, the role of the

community organizer and the participatory tools in engaging community
organizing are presented.

Community organizing is:

1. A process of building power
2. Involving people and identifying structure that causes
problems and possible solutions to it.
3. Using negotiation, confrontation and pressure when needed
4. Building an institution that is democratically controlled by the
people.

Since the people themselves are the protagonist and problem solvers, they
engage in analysis and project cycle management scheme.

In analysis, they employ tools that include:

A. Analysis of the stakeholders: identifying people likely to be affected
by the proposed intervention.
B. Problem analysis:structured investigation of the situation in
order to establish causes and effects.
C. Analysis of objectives:identification and verification of the future
desired results.
D. Analysis of strategies: critical assessment of the alternative ways of
achieving objectives.

In project cycle scheme, they are familiar with project cycle with six
phases:
A. Programming: first phase of the project cycle during which the
program is prepared.
B. Identification: second phase of the project cycle. It’s the initial
elaboration of the project idea in terms of objectives, results and
activities.
C. Appraisal: third phase of the project cycle. It involves the
establishment of the details of the project on the basis of the
feasibility study.
D. Financing:fourth phase of the project cycle during which projects
are approved for financing.
E. Implementation: fifth phase of the project cycle during which the
project is implemented and monitored
F. Evaluation:sixth and the final phase of the project cycle during
which the project is examined against its objectives.

Take note that community organizing is not equated with project, not a
technique for solving problem and not just neighborhood thing. Community
organizing is people’s power from the grassroots.
We will not label community organizers as leftist, anti-government and
nuisance to the community. Community organizers are people of good hearts
who teach people particularly the marginalized, the less privileged and poor
sector in our society that I am the change, you are the change and we are the
change.

Let us have now the activities in line with the tools when engaging a
community organizing.

What’s More

ACTIVITY I: PROBLEM TREE ANALYSIS

This activity is part of analysis of stakeholders highlighting tool used in

engaging community organizing. This is what we call problem tree. In this
illustration is made up three components; roots of the tree ( causes ), the
body of the tree ( problems ) and leaves of the tree ( results ).

Example given in the problem tree, tourism industry ( sprouting of hotels).

PROBLEM ( body of a tree ): soil pollution.

CAUSES OF THE PROBLEM: ( roots of the tree ): Poor waste management
system in the hotels.
RESULTS ( LEAVES OF THE TREETS ): Drinking water is contaminate with
bacteria.

Make your your own problem tree analysis based on the community problem
you experience. Write it in a sheet of paper.
ACTIVITY II : COMMUNITY MAPPING

This activity is still part of analysis of stakeholders. Community Mapping is

all about involving residents in identifying the assets of their neighbourhood,
looking at opportunities and creating a picture of what it is like to live
there. ...

Below is an example of community mapping. Make your own community map

reflective on your community. Do it in a sheet of paper.
What I Have Learned

There are many activities you get through, and it’s likely you learn a lot.
Learning shall be the following:

1. The life of Efren is centered on helping the poor children in getting

education through his kariton klasrum. His words: we are the change
that the world needs. It’s a service that goes beyond self and happiness
comes.

2. In the poem presented, peace can attained if we take a lead, and take a
good example in life. Exemplary life speaks greater that words.

3. Fed up in the news about corruption, there comes 6 young Filipinos who
give a difference in their communities. They are a living testimonies that
we are the change.

4. In community engagement, community development through solidarity

is a direction we move towards. Participation and empowerment of the
people are at topmost priorities.

5. Participatory tools shall be crafted and be used in community engagement

to be more effective and efficient in serving the poorest of the poor.

What I Can Do

This activity is for us to develop a sense of awareness that I AM THE

CHANGE. YOU ARE THE CHANGE and WE ARE THE CHANGE.

Draw a ladder. In each rung, write the following levels for us to focus on-the
step. `Our World’ is at the top of the ladder and `The Individual; is at the
bottom rung.. Post it in a conspicuous area in your house. Make your own
ladder based on the example given below.
WE ARE THE CHANGE
