Good morning, class! Good morning, Ma’am!

How are you today? Are you ready We’re all good Ma’am and we
for today’s discussion? are ready for today’s discussion.

Very good!
Before we proceed with our new lesson,
let us first recall what has been discussed
last meeting.
Who can recall our topic last meeting? (opens her mic and answer)
Yes _________, can you tell us what has Last meeting, we discussed
been discussed last meeting? about “Quartile for ungrouped
data”.
Very good!

How do you define “ Quartiles”? (a student raises a hand)

(opens his mic and answer)
Yes _______? The quartiles are the score points
which divide a distribution into four
equal parts.
Yes, very good!

So, I have here a short activity. The “4

Pics 1 word” All you have to do is to
determine the word based on the given 4
pictures.

1.
(a student raises a hand)
(opens her mic and answer)
Measure, ma’am.
Who can answer?
Yes ___________.

Correct! The answer is MEASURE.

2.
Who wants to answer number 2?
Yes ___________.

Correct! The answer is POSITION. (a student raises a hand)

(opens his mic and answer)
Position, ma’am.

3.

Who wants to answer number 3?

Yes ___________.

Correct! The answer is DIVIDE.

(a student raises a hand)
4. (opens her mic and answer)
Divide ma’am.

Who wants to answer number 4?

Yes __________.

Correct! The answer is TEN.

a student raises a hand)
5. (opens her mic and answer)
Ten ma’am.

Who wants to answer number 5?

Yes __________.

Correct! The answer is EQUAL. Very

good!
(a student raises a hand)
6. (opens her mic and answer)
Equal, ma’am.
Who wants to answer number 6?
Yes __________.

Correct! The answer is PARTS. Very good.

Okay class, the words formed from the (a student raises a hand)
short activity will be your guide in (opens her mic and answer)
comprehending the lesson we are about to Parts, ma’am.
discuss this morning.

Class, At the end of the lesson you will be

able to Illustrates deciles and calculate
deciles for ungrouped data

Class, our lesson for today is about Deciles

for Ungrouped Data.

Activity 2
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

Now, let us understand what a deciles for

ungrouped data is.

So, first we will define the word

Ungrouped Data.
So, what do we mean by Ungrouped Data? (opens her mic and read)
Who can read the definition of Ungrouped data which is also known
Ungrouped Data? as raw data is data that has not been
Yes ________? placed in any group or category after
collection. Data is categorized in
Thank you! numbers or characteristics therefore,
the data which has not been put in any
Next, We will define decile. of the categories is ungrouped.
Who can read the definition of decile?

Yes_________?
(opens her mic and read)
The DECILES are nine score-points
that divide a distribution into ten equal
parts.
Thank You!

So, The DECILES are nine score-points that

divide a distribution into ten equal parts.
Deciles are denoted as D1, D2, D3, …, D9
, and computed in the same way that the
quartiles are calculated. The word decile was
first known used on 1882, it comes from the
Latin word decem ten- it means more at Ten.

D1 D2 D3 D4 D5 D6 D7 D8 D9

To calculate deciles for the ungrouped data,

first arrange all observation in ascending
order then use the following formula
for Decile.

k (n+ 1)
Dk =
10

Where,
n = the total number of observations in that
data set.
k = the value of the decile that needs to be
calculated.

Example 1:
Find the 5th decile or D5 of the following test
scores of a random sample of ten students.
35,42,40,28,15,23,33,20,16,18,and 28.
(a student raises a hand)
Who wants to read example number 1? (opens her mic and read)
Yes ________? Find the 3rd decile or D3 of the
following test scores of a random
Thank you! sample of ten students.

Solution:
First, arrange the scores in ascending order.

15,16,18,20,23,28,33,35,40,42

to find the D5 position, use the formula

k (n+ 1)
Dk = and round off the answer to the
10
nearest integer.

n= 11
k= 5

k (n+ 1)
Dk =
10
5(11+1)
D5 =
10
5(12)
D5 =
10

60
D5 =
10
D5 = 6
(opens his/her mic and answer)
D5is the 6 element.
th Answer may vary
Therefore, D5=28
a student raises a hand)
Did you get it, class? (opens her mic and read)
Do you have any questions or clarifications? Mrs. Marasigan is a veterinarian. One
morning, she asked her secretary to
record the service time for 14
If none, let’s proceed to example 2. costumers.
Who wants to read example 2?
Yes _______?

Thank you!

Example 2:

Mrs. Marasigan is a veterinarian. One

morning, she asked her secretary to record
the service time for 14 costumers.

The following are service times in minutes.

20,35,55,28.46,32,25,56,55,28,37,47,52,17

Find the value of the 7th deciles using linear

interpolation and 8th decile.

Solution:
Arrange the given service time in ascending
order.
(a student raises a hand)
Who can give me the ascending order of the (opens her mic and answer)
given service time? 17,20,25,28,28,32,35,37,46,47,52,55,55
Yes____? ,56

Correct! Very Good!

So, we have
17,20,25,28,28,32,35,37,46,47,52,55,55,56

So, we will solve for the value of 7 th decile or

D7 and we will interpolate the value to obtain
the position of service time in minutes.

To Interpolate Deciles
Deciles Interpolated value = size of {nth term
+ 1/10 (succeeding term – nth term)}, where
1 stands for the size of the decile and nth
term stands for the term obtained from the
size of the decile.
So we will try it later, but before that we will
solve first the 7th decile. So, we have

k (n+ 1)
Dk =
10

7(14 +1)
D7 =
10

7(15)
D7 =
10

105
D7 =
10

D7 = 10.5

Now, we will interpolate 10.5

10th term= 47, 11th term = 52

7
D7 = 10th term + ( 11th term – 10th term)
10

7
D7 = 47 + ( 52 – 47)
10

D7 = 47 + 0.7(5)

D7 = 47 + 3.5 (a student raises a hand)

(opens her mic and answer)
D7 = 50.5
k (n+ 1)
Dk =
Next, we will solve for the value of 8th decile. 10
Who wants to solve for the 8th decile or D8?
Yes _________? 8(14 +1)
D8 =
10

8(15)
D8 =
10

120
D8 =
10
D8 = 12

D8 is the 12th element.

Therefore, the value of D8= 55.

Correct ! very good!

Okay class, do you have any None, Ma’am.
questions/ clarifications?

Did you understand my discussion?

Okay. At this point, I will ask you some
questions. This is to test if you really
listened and understood the lesson. Yes Ma’am.
a) How will you define Deciles?
Yes ___________. (opens her mic and answer)
The DECILES are nine score-points
that divide a distribution into ten
equal parts.
Okay, very good!

b) How is Deciles for Ungrouped Data (opens her mic and answer)
computed? Yes ____________. Deciles for Ungrouped Data
computed using the formula

k (n+ 1)
Dk =
10
Yes, that’s correct!

Activity 4
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

1. For your learning activity, solve the

following problems involving deciles for
ungrouped data. Show your solution in the
Whiteboard. You have 3 minutes to answer
the following problem. When you’re done,
raise your hand to signify that you are finish
answering. Be ready to present your work in
the class.

1. Find the 4th decile and 9th deciles of a

data set: 5, 6, 4, 8,7,2,11,12,15

2. Given the series 3,5, 7, 4, 6, 2, and 9.

Calculate the 2nd decile using
Interpolation.
