(Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcMi80qKiNY)

● The teacher will ask the students:

○ What did you feel after watching the video?
○ What did you observe or notice with the video?
○ What made it more convincing?

● The teacher will present the definition of Propaganda.

○ Propaganda is a publicity to promote something:
information put out by an organization or government to
promote a policy, idea, or cause and misleading
publicity: deceptive or distorted information that is
systematically spread.- Microsoft Ⓡ Encarta Ⓡ 2009.
Ⓒ1993-2008 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
○ Propaganda appears in a variety of forms. It is strategic
and intentional as it aims to influence attitudes, opinions
and behaviors. Propaganda can be beneficial or
harmful. It may use truth, half-truths or lies. To be
successful, propaganda taps into our deepest values,
fears, hopes and dreams.
– Steven Luckert and Susan Bachrach, The State of
Deception, 2007

D. Discussing New Concepts

Propaganda Technique #1 Bandwagon
and Practicing New Skill#1
● Bandwagon persuades the consumer by telling that others are
doing the same thing. It tries to get the target audience to jump
on board, so as to not "miss out" on what everyone else is
doing. It focuses on the target audience's desire to be included.
For example:
● In the poster, under the words “McDonald’s
Hamburgers” it says, “Over 99 billion served. “The
indirect meaning of the phrase “Over 99 billion
served” can suggest that “everyone is buying our
hamburgers, so shouldn’t you join the majority?”

■ By stating “over a million Australians have

already tried Oral-B toothpastes”, Oral-B makes
itself appear more desirable.
The average consumer would want to fit in, so if
a million Australians were taking Oral-B, then the
average consumer may feel pressured to take
Oral-B.

■ Someone is saying to join the Internet because

everyone else uses it.
E. Discussing New Concepts
Propaganda Technique #2 Testimonial
and Practicing New Skill#2

from famous people or authority figures.

○ For example:

(Source:https://www.tes.com/lessons/i5SzBcXLokQf_w/year-8-advertising)

■ Kris Aquino, a famous person said something

about how Nescafe helped her with her busy
schedule. It shows that you should drink
Nescafe because she is drinking it.

■ Social media is a powerful tool to influence

people. We can usually see artists are promoting
a product by using their social media accounts.
They just post and state why they use that
specific product so that they can influence
people to have that product.
