Lecture 13 CA II (En 214)

1. The document discusses two-port networks, which are characterized by their relationships between four terminal quantities (V1, I1, V2, I2). 2. Two-port networks can be described by several parameter sets, including impedance (z) parameters, admittance (y) parameters, and hybrid (h) parameters. 3. Examples are provided to show how to calculate the different parameter sets for given two-port networks, and how the parameter sets relate to physical properties of the networks.

INTRODUCTION (1)

 Port
 A pair of terminals through which a current may enter or leave a
network

3
INTRODUCTION (2)

 Importance
 Such networks are useful in communications, control systems, power
systems, and electronics.
 Knowing the parameters of a two-port network enables us to treat
it as a “black box” when embedded within a larger network.

 Characterization
 Two port networks are characterized by the relation between the 4
terminal quantities [V1, I1, V2, I2] out of which 2 are independent.
 The various terms that relate the terminal quantities are called
parameters.

6
IMPEDANCE PARAMETERS (3)

 When z11 = z22, the two-port network is said to be symmetrical.

This implies that the network has mirror-like symmetry about
some center-line; that is, a line can be found that divides the
network into two similar halves.
 When the two-port network is linear and has no dependent
sources, the transfer impedances are equal (z12 = z21), and the
two-port is said to be reciprocal.
