This service bulletin addresses faults that may be stored in the electronic transmission control unit after replacing the Aisin automatic transmission on certain Mini models. Due to hardware changes, faults related to transmission sensors and switches may be logged. The software also needs to be updated using ISTA to clear the faults and avoid illumination of the malfunction indicator lamp. Technicians are instructed to connect the vehicle to the appropriate diagnostic tool and program the required software level during the transmission replacement procedure. An interim repair procedure using ISTA Next is available until the specified software update is released.

EGS FAULTS STORED AFTER AISIN TRANSMISSION


REPLACEMENT

Equipped with an AISIN GA6F21AW or GA8F22AW automatic transmission

SITUATION
Due to hardware changes in the AISIN GA6F21AW or GA8F22AW transmissions, the following fault codes
may be stored in the electronic transmission control unit (EGS) if the transmission is replaced:

Additionally, the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) may be illuminated along with a “Transmission Faulted!”
check control message (CCM).

CAUSE
A software incompatibility with updated transmission hardware.

CORRECTION
In conjunction with the transmission replacement, update the EGS using ISTA 4.18.1x (estimated availablility
early July 2019). An IRAP solution is available until ISTA 4.18.1x is released.

PROCEDURE
While performing an AISIN GA6F21AW or GA8F22AW transmission replacement:

1. Connect the vehicle to a MINI-approved battery charger/ power supply (SI M04 08 09).
2. Program the vehicle using ISTA 4.18.1x or higher to the appropriate I level shown below:

IRAP Next solution until the release of ISTA 4.18.1x

1. Connect the vehicle to a MINI-approved battery charger/ power supply (SI M04 08 09).
2. Program the vehicle with the most recent version of ISTA Next available.
3. Prepare the vehicle for an IRAP connection (SI M09 01 16).
4. Create a TSARA case named “IRAP -AISIN transmission replacement”(M00 02 19).
5. Follow any post processing instructions given by the TSARA specialist.
