Visual Art Student Workshop

The document provides instructions for IMAGE LAB students to work in breakout rooms on Miro boards, analyzing each other's work-in-progress images from an assignment without revealing details, and discussing how effectively the images convey their intended messages. It also outlines topics for students to consider when analyzing images and reminds them that their artistic choices contribute to the meanings and messages communicated to viewers. A deadline is given for students to upload their lab assignments and the "What If" assignment to Brightspace for evaluation.

IMAGE LAB Day 3

Joana Choumali Sabine Hertig

IMAGE CREATION VISUAL LANGUAGE IMAGE ANALYSIS

IMAGE LAB
IN BREAK OUT ROOMS:

1. Go to Miro board.

2. Upload your work-in-progress from the

WHAT IF assignment.

3. Without revealing anything, discuss with

each other what each image provokes in
you.

4. Analyse each others images.

5. Write down under each images what you

think is the underlying thought behind it.

6. Discuss the outcomes and check: does the

image convey what you want it to
communicate? If not, what could you do
differently?
IMAGE LAB
• What is your first impression of the image?
• What in the image intrigues you?
• What specific aspect?
• How do you feel when you look at the
image?
• What part of the image causes this feeling?
(atmosphere, aesthetics, colours, light, etc.)
• What associations does the image evoke in
you?
• What in the image causes that?
• Does the image give you new insights or
thoughts? If yes, what then? If not, why
not?
• What function might you assign to the
image: informational, conceptual,
educational, inspirational, etc.
• What could the function of the image be in
a fashion context?
• In an image series: what do the multiple
images have in common?
• How do the images differ from each other?
IMAGE LAB
THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE

Keep in mind that all your choices have

meaning. The medium you choose, the
techniques you choose, the colours you
choose, the subjects you depict, all
contribute to what you communicate to the
viewer.

Consider carefully what artistic choices you

want to make and what they convey.

Explore and experiment with different

options. What combinations communicate
your message most effectively?

Be critical!
