Image Lab Basic 02 ENG Def 20221

The document is a workshop outline for analyzing and creating images through juxtaposition and collage techniques. It discusses analyzing images by identifying their narrative, denotation, and connotation. It then provides examples of juxtaposing different images to create new meanings and narratives, such as combining disparate shapes that have similarities, or juxtaposing cultural ideas and identities to suggest connections. The workshop involves three assignments using these techniques: 1) Juxtaposition, 2) Collage, and 3) Silhouette.

Ideas and views, cast in the form of a story

An overarching concept that influences

COLLAGE
A collage can sometimes consist of
magazine and newspaper clippings,
ribbons, paint, pieces of coloured or
handmade paper, elements from other
artworks, texts, photographs and other
found objects, pasted onto a piece of
paper or canvas.

The origins of collages go back hundreds of

years.

This technique made a dramatic re-entry in

the early 20th century as an art form.

COLLAGE
The use of collage techniques is another method
of bringing together information from different
sources, e.g. photos, images, magazine clippings,
printouts, etc.

The images you select do not necessarily have to

have something in common directly.

A good collage explores a variety of elements that

have their own strengths and qualities, but when
combined as a whole indicate new directions or
ideas.

When working with images, don't be limited by

the shape of a frame: for example, a rectangle or
square. Cut out, organise and assemble the
shapes in a creative way instead.

Experiment and sketch with different options in

scale, placement and selection. Different
qualities in paper type, matte, glossy, smooth,
texture and thicknesses.

(Tip: use photo glue so you can still move the http://www.inajang.com/work/radiator-theatre
elements around).
ASSIGNMENT 2 Collage
Experiment and work intuitively: let the image emerge.

Step 1: Select various image elements: shapes, colours,

textures, backgrounds, materials, etc.

Step 2: Cut, slice or tear them into parts (not too small).

Step 3: Place and replace them. Shift the image elements in

relation to each other and study what happens when you

add or leave out some elements, enlarge or reduce them,

place them in the foreground or background, etc.

Step 4: Choose an arrangement: what do you place

centrally in your collage. What are dominant elements.
