Apaneca
Apaneca is a municipality in the department of Ahuachapán, in El Salvador.
The first references to Apaneca date back to the year 1550, when its
population was estimated at approximately 500 people; The municipality has
an area of 45.13 km² and the headwaters are 1,455 meters above sea level,
which is why it is considered the population located at the highest altitude in
the country.
Due to its altitude, the area produces good quality coffee. Apaneca is also a
point of interest on the so-called Ruta de las Flores and has hotels,
restaurants, buggy vehicle tours and the extreme sport of canopy.
Other tourist sites in Apaneca, are:
 Church of San Andrés Apóstol

 Green Lagoons and Las Ninfas

¿What is de Apaneca Maze?

The Albania’s maze, or Apaneca maze (as it is popularly known) is a tourist
destination located, as its name indicates, in the municipality of Apaneca in
the department of Ahuachapán. It is a tourist center that has become very
popular in recent months, it is made up of more than two thousand cypress
trees which have been carefully cared for to give them a curious shape.
The maze is located inside the "Café Albania", a business created on a coffee
farm of six blocks of land, which opened its doors to the public in July 2017
with an investment of approximately 30 thousand dollars.
The goal os this maze is to get to the center where you can ring a bell, also,
you have the option to ask for help if you get lost or desperate. The entrance
to the maze costs three or two dollars in the case of children.
History of the maze of Apaneca
The 2,000-square-meter labyrinth began to take shape 10 years ago, when
Mauricio Arévalo, owner of the farm, made the first lines and planted the first
cypress tree, with the help of his employees.
According to its owner, his vision was that in the future the potential of this
area could be exploited, due to the impressive view, location and shape of the
land. However, the Salvadoran coffee industry has been affected by the drop
in international prices and has also been attacked by pests such as rust; so it
is common for the coffee sector to see other options to become profitable.
“Today it is quite common for coffee growers to migrate from production to
the service sector, such as restaurants and cafes, among others. In
Guatemala, for example, there are many who are migrating to the field of
electrical energy”, comments Mr. Arévalo.
The commitment to tourism is that it is a more dynamic sector, where money
flows more, while coffee is a business that provides benefits once a year and
is more exposed to climate change. For this reason, he decided to offer
himself a healthy entertainment service with the labyrinth considered the
largest in Central America.

Gastronomy in Apaneca
Apaneca’s gastronomy isn’t as extensive as that of other municipalities on the
flower route; however, it has the strength in its drink: coffee. Their main dish
is cambray tamales, but they also offer other dishes such as cream or tanned
tenquiques, yucca puree, or squash in milk.
