COCKPIT VOICE RECORDER

INTRODUCTION
The Gulfstream G650 communications system contains systems and subsystems
necessary for communication within the aircraft, between different aircraft, and
between the aircraft and ground stations. The information contained herein is intended
only as an instructional aid. This material does not supersede, nor is it meant as a
substitute for any of the manufacturer’s maintenance or operational publications. The
material presented has been prepared from the basic OEM design data. All subse-
quent changes in aircraft appearance and/or system operation will be covered during
academic training and subsequent revisions to this publication.

COCKPIT VOICE RECORDER (CVR)

(ATA 23)
GENERAL
The Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) system provides the ability to record
the last 2 hours of cockpit audio at each flight position & cockpit area
(Figure CVR-1).

The pre-amplification and audio conditioning functions of the wideband

channel are also contained within the recorder, thereby eliminating the
need for a cockpit-mounted control panel. In addition to the audio inputs,
the CVR will record digital communications data from an ARINC 429 bus
from the MAU. The CVR converts analog signals to a digital format and
stores the data in solid state memory.

Audio signals originating from the pilot, copilot and observer are routed
through the Audio Control Panels (ACP) to the CVR. Audio signals
originating from the cockpit area microphone are routed through the CVR
Remote Cockpit Control Unit (RCCU) to the CVR. The last 2 hours of
voice recorded data is safely stored in the CVR. The CVR data can only
be manually erased when the aircraft is on the ground.

COMPONENTS
Underwater Locator Beacon
The underwater locator beacon (Figure CVR-2) transmits an acoustic
signal to aid in locating the CVR aircraft underwater. The beacon consists
of a self-contained battery, electronic module and a transducer housed in
a watertight case. The case housing the beacon is capable of withstanding
high G impact shock and deep water immersion.

Area Microphone
The area microphone (Figure CVR-3) is a directional condenser type that
operates in a frequency bandwidth of 150 – 5000 Hz. The microphone
picks up all audible cockpit signals. Aircraft engine noises picked up by
the microphone are electronically suppressed.

Impact Switch
The impact switch (Figure CVR-5) is activated by an impact severe enough
to overcome the predetermined G force level of approximately 2.5 G. The
CVR is prevented from recording any data when the impact switch is
activated.

The impact switch contains the following controls and indicators:

• Indicator lamp (red) stays on continuously after impact switch is
activated
• RESET pushbutton releases a latched relay, enabling the impact
switch to reset and indicator lamp to go out

The ACPs in the pilot and copilot side consoles and observer panel control
audio function of the navigation and communication radios headphones /
headsets, and microphones. The CV recorder receives audio input from
the pilot / copilot / observer microphones and cockpit microphone through
the ACPs. ACPs also control audio output for the CV recorder system
(Figure CVR-7).

The bulk erase switch (Figure CVR-8) labeled VOICE RECORDER PRESS
TO ERASE, is used to bulk erase data contained in the CVR.

The switch is wired in series with the MED and the WOW relay contacts
that only allows the erasure function to occur when the aircraft is on the
ground, with the MED open and in a WOW state.
