C. Presenting examples/ instances of the new lesson
Read the story then answer the given questions below.
My Aunt’s Big Help
One morning, Thea noticed her niece sitting beside their door. She seemed so sad so she approached
her. “Why are you lonely? asked Thea. “Aunt, my classmate informed me that we are going to have a quiz in
Science tomorrow. I am afraid that I might fail because I was not able to attend our online class this morning
due to poor internet connection. The topic is about materials that conduct heat and electricity. I don’t have any
idea about that”, said Airish. “Oh, I see. Let me help you. I will teach you”, Thea answered. “Thank you Aunt”,
Airish replied happily.
They went to the kitchen. Thea hold the cooking pot, metal spoon and fork. “These materials are made
up of metals so they are considered as good conductor of heat and electricity”, explained Thea. “The atoms of
these objects form a matrix that allows electrons to move freely. Aluminum foil, knife and metal plate are
another example of conductor “, she added.
“Have you noticed that your mother is using pot holder or mitten when holding a hot pot? It is because
these objects help her not to feel the heat from those materials. Pot holder and mitten are made up of fabric
that does not easily allow heat and electricity to pass through” Thea said.
“Do you understand now, Airish?” asked Thea. “Thank you, Aunt! What you have taught was really a
great help. I am sure that I will get a high score tomorrow” answered Thea with a big smile.
Ask the following questions:
1. Who are the main characters in the story?
2. What are the materials mentioned in the story? Which are considered metals? Which are non-metals?
3. If you are Thea, will you help Airish? Why?
(EXPLANATION)
D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills (We do)
-Discussion
Some materials are good conductor of heat and electricity. They can easily transfer heat and electricity
to another material. Solid conducts heat and electricity better compared to liquid and gas. It is because their
particles are packed together or closer. Metal, gold, silver, iron, and copper are examples of conductors.
Silver is considered as the best metal that conducts heat and electricity. The most used conductor in
electronic wiring is the copper.
Materials that do not easily flow heat and electricity to other materials are called insulators. Ceramic,
rubber, wood, paper, plastic and fabric are example of this.
Remember that different materials differ in the way they conduct heat and electricity.
E. Developing mastery (I do)
Let the pupils perform Activity I
Directions: Draw a happy face (😊) if the material is a good conductor of heat and electricity and sad (☹) if
not.
1. paper clip
2. chalk
3. wooden table
4. towel
5. candy wrapper
(ELABORATION)
F. Finding practical applications of concepts and skills in daily living
(You do)
Group the learners in to three groups and let them do the three activities below.
Directions: Identify the materials that are good conductor of heat and electricity by doing the activity and
answering the graphic organizer and table below.
comb aluminium foil
toothpick metal spoon
plastic spoon pencil eraser
coin rubber band
crayons paper
Set Up A Materials: small flashlight bulb or LED, one 1.5V AA Battery, aluminium foil, self-adhesive tape, scissors
Set Up B Materials: hot water and mug
For Both Setups: coin, comb, pencil eraser, paper, paper clip, toothpick, metal spoon, tongs
SETUP A (For First Group) ELECTRICITY FLOW
1. Cut a part of the aluminium foil into three strips about 10 cm long.
2. Fold or roll the strips until its diameter is similar to an electrical cord.
3. Tape one end of the first strip to the negative side of the battery.
4. Place the other end of the strip around the light bulb.
5. Tape one end of the second strip to the positive side of the battery and the third strip around the light bulb.
6. Test your connection by bringing the free ends of the second and third strips together. Adjust as necessary.
7. Once your circuit works, try testing the objects listed above. If the bulb will light up by making one side of the
object touch the free end of the second strip and the other side, the free end of the third strip.
8. Be sure to disconnect the circuit between each trial for a few seconds, especially if either the aluminium foil or
battery begins to heat up.
9. Record your observations.
SETUP B (For Second Group) HEAT FLOW
1. Put hot water in a mug. Be careful when experimenting with hot water.
2. Place all the objects in the mug for setup B.
3. After one minute, drain the water in the mug and get the objects using a tong.
4. Touch each object and record your observations in a tabular form below.
5. Put a (/) if the answer to the question is Yes and (x) if the answer to the question is No.
OBJECT DID THE OBJECTS BECOME HOT?
Coin
Copper wire
Comb
Metal spoon
Paper
Paper clip
Pencil
Eraser
toothpick
Questions:
1. Which among the materials are good conductors of heat and electricity? What does this show and prove?
2. Which among the materials are insulators of electricity and heat? What does this show or prove?
G. Application
Directions: Classify the given materials whether they are conductor or insulator.
1. Color pencil 4. Plastic cup
2. aluminum 5.metal fork
3. blanket 6. Gold earrings

H. Making generalizations and abstractions about the lesson
The teacher guides the pupils to generalize as follows:
Directions: Fill in the blank with appropriate words to complete the paragraph.
Some materials are good conductor of ___________ and electricity. They can easily transfer heat and
electricity to another material. __________conducts heat and electricity better compared to liquid and gas. It
is because their particles are packed together or closer. Metal, gold, silver, iron, and copper are examples of
conductors. _________ is considered as the best metal that conducts heat and electricity. The most used
conductor in electronic wiring is the ____________.
Materials that do not easily flow heat and electricity to other materials are called_____________.
Ceramic, rubber, wood, paper, plastic and fabric are example of this.
