The largest festival in the world is Brazil’s Carnival which is considered by many to be “the greatest
show on Earth.” More than 5 million people travel to Brazil in February or March to attend this religious
celebration that begins 40 days before Easter. The festival is full of live music and people dancing in the
streets. More than 70+ samba schools compete every year for cash and prizes. Dancers from these schools
wear colorful and creative costumes. They form a long line of people in the street called a parade that starts in
the city center and stops at the ocean. The festival takes place before the Catholic season of Lent and
celebrates the last day before Brazilians must give up the things they love for 40 days. The festival ends with a
beautiful fire show on the beach when the sun goes down.

Singapore
Singapore is a country in Southeast Asia. It is an island near the end of the Malay peninsula. A
“peninsula" is a piece of land that has water on three sides. Singapore is called a “city-state.” This means that
it is an independent country that has only one city. Singapore is the name of the country and the city that take
up the entire island.
Because of its location, Singapore has become a critical business hub. “Hub” means center or key
location. It is a good stopping point for ships that are traveling between Asia and Europe or Africa. When trade
was primarily done by ships, Singapore became a very important port. A “port” is a place where ships go in
and out. This continues today. Singapore is the fifth largest port in the world!
Being an important port, Singapore has also become a very important center for world business. This
means that Singapore has a very strong and diverse economy, which sets it apart from many other Southeast

Exercise 4: Read the following passage. For each question, complete the notes with NO MORE THAN ONE
WORD.

Dear Mayor,
My name is Henry Little. I am the town's energy expert. I have completed my research on new renewable
energy sources and have found a few that I would suggest. Solar panels work great during the day and are
very cheap to build. Wind turbines are clean to run and will work great during the windy seasons like fall and
spring. Finally, nuclear power is clean and can run all day. Renewable energy has many advantages over non-
renewable sources like coal. However, the town should keep a natural gas power plant just in case it's cloudy
or the wind stops. A good mix of both energy sources can help keep the lights on and reduce pollution, so I
suggest the town increase the total use of renewable energy to 70%, close the coal power plant, and keep the
natural gas plant.

Henry, the town’s (33)____________ expert, completed his research on renewables. He suggested that the
town use (34)________________ because they work great during the day and wind turbines because they are
(35)____________ to run. Henry also suggested (36)____________ because it can run all day, and the town
should increase the total use of (37)____________ energy to 70%.

Exercise 5: Read the following passage. For each question, write T if the statement is TRUE, F if the
statement is FALSE, and NI if there is NO INFORMATION.

Journal Entry 15/07/2020

by Jennifer

I just returned home from a year of studying abroad in America. It's only been a few days, and I am already
missing my new friends. I will have to keep in touch and follow them on social media because they were fun to
play with and helped me in school. Sometimes, they would see that I would get really annoyed when I failed
my tests, so they started helping me with my homework. I was lucky to have such great friends. Studying
abroad was good because it showed me how hard work pays off, although it wasn't always easy. One time, I
remember how disappointed my mom was when I told her I did not pass my science test. But, after lots of
practice, my English improved, and I started to do better on my tests, which pleased her.
