38. MAKAR SANKRANTI : Makar Sankranti, an ancient Indian festival celebrated all over the country in the month
of January . This festival being one of the few Indian festivals that is observed according to the Sun, almost
always falls on the same date that is January 14/15. This harvest festival is celebrated across the nation with a
variety of different practices and customs according to culture, region and localization. Diversity of our country is
appreciated by the fact that this festival is known by lots of different names in different regions across the nation
like ‘Lohri’ in Punjab, ‘Bihu’ in Assam, ‘Pongal’ in Tamil Nadu. One of the very famous practices on this occasion
is celebrating by flying kites in the sky. Keeping this in mind, a kite factory owner decided to manufacture bi-
colored kites in his factory. The shape of the kite is a square with an equilateral triangle attached at the bottom
and with a ‘Kamaan’ (Bow shaped stick) which forms a quadrant of a circle (as shown in the figure). The kite has
to be made with blue colored paper (shaded portion) and red colored paper (un-shaded portion).
(i) Find the area of blue colored paper in making one kite.

(ii) Find the total length of bow shaped stick BD (Kamaan) and the vertical stick AC used for making one kite.
(iii) If the cost of blue paper used is Rs 2 per sq cm and red paper used is Rs 3 per sq cm. Calculate the cost of
paper required to manufacture 500 kites of same type.
(iv) If the cost of stick is Rs 0.5 per cm then calculate the total cost of manufacturing 500 kites (including the
cost of paper).
