Indonesia quake survivors appeal for supplies as rain hampers rescue

CIANJUR, Indonesia — Survivors of an Indonesian earthquake that killed at least

268 people appealed for food and water Wednesday, as heavy rain and aftershocks
hampered rescue efforts among the rubble of devastated villages.
The calls for help came as authorities warned that debris from landslides caused by
the strong quake near the town of Cianjur in West Java needed to be cleared as
rains forecast for the coming weeks threatened a second disaster.
Two days after the quake flattened their homes, residents were still trying to retrieve
priceless belongings including family photos, religious books and marriage
certificates.
"Although some supplies have arrived, it is not enough. We got rice, instant noodles,
mineral water but it's not enough," Mustafa, a 23-year-old resident of Gasol village,
told AFP.
Mustafa had just dug through the rubble of an elderly neighbour's house at her
request, appearing from the destroyed facade carrying a pile of clothes before
returning to collect rice, a gas stove, canisters and frying pans.
In Talaga village, some residents put signs on the windows of damaged houses and
the front of tents that read "We need help!"
In the streets, at least three people held up cardboard boxes, asking for donations.
A shallow 3.9-magnitude aftershock sent panicked evacuees running from shelters
on Wednesday, according to an AFP reporter at the scene.

 Climate change will fuel diseases, warns Global Fund
GENEVA, Switzerland — Climate change will end up killing people by fuelling
infectious diseases, the head of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and
Malaria said Tuesday.
Executive director Peter Sands said that in 2022, the fund had witnessed the
"escalating impact" of climate change on health.
While upsurges in malaria had hitherto been seen due to the increasing frequency
and devastation of tropical storms, "with the flooding in Pakistan it was taken to a
completely different scale", he said.
"What we are seeing is that the mechanism by which climate change will end up
killing people is through its impact on infectious disease."
Sands said that parts of Africa which previously were unaffected by malaria are now
becoming at risk as temperatures rise and allow mosquitos to thrive, notably at
higher altitudes.
However, the population in such areas will not have immunity, with the resulting risk
of a higher mortality rate.
"It's quite alarming," Sands told a briefing with the UN correspondents' association.
Other threats include tuberculosis spreading among the increasing number of
displaced people around the world.
"TB is a disease that thrives on having concentrations of highly-stressed people in
close confines with inadequate food and shelter," he said.
"The more that we see climate change-driven displacement of people, the more I
think that will translate into the conditions that will at least make it more likely."
Sands also said food insecurity would make people more vulnerable to disease.
As for whether the world was better prepared for the next pandemic than it was for
Covid-19, Sands said it was, but added: "That doesn't mean we are well prepared:
we're just not as badly prepared as we were before."
By the end of 2022, Sands said the Global Fund will have invested around $5.4
billion, which is significantly more than it has ever done before.
The Geneva-based organisation's largest donors are G7 governments, led by the
United States and France.

 6 killed, 3 hurt in Cotabato heist
COTABATO CITY , Philippines — Six persons including a police officer were killed
following an alleged shootout with suspected robbers in M’lang, Cotabato on
Tuesday afternoon.
S/Sgt. Rudy Amihan Jr. was declared dead on arrival in a hospital, according to Brig.
Gen. Jamili Macaraig, chief of the Soccsksargen (South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan
Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos) police.
Amihan was among a team of police officers who exchanged fire with the robbers in
Barangay Sangat.
The other fatalities include four suspects and a civilian, identified as Jack Gumilao.
Four others – Cpl. Noli Labesores, Pat. Herzon Neyra, and civilians Tweeny Daza
and Jose Patlubay – were taken to a hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds.
Reports said nine men on motorcycles robbed at gunpoint a bakery in nearby
Barangay Bagontapay.
The suspects shot Daza, Gumilao and Patlubay for trying to stop them.
The robbers fled after taking the money and valuables of bakery owner Pompeo
Jubelag Jr.
Pursuing officers of the M’lang police caught up with the suspects in Barangay
Sangat.
The suspects shot the officers, triggering a firefight that resulted in the death of
Amihan and their four cohorts.
Five others fled, leaving behind the cadavers of their companions.
Probers said they recovered a pistol from each of the slain robber.

 8 rescued from drifting boat off Tawi-Tawi
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Navy personnel rescued eight persons on a
motorboat that drifted off an island in Tawi-Tawi at dawn on Tuesday.
The Naval Task Group Tawi-Tawi conducted search and rescue operations after a
concerned civilian alerted a monitoring station in Bongao about a missing motor
launch, Naval Forces Western Mindanao chief Rear Adm. Toribio Adaci Jr. said.
The distressed vessel, M/L Rihana, was found off the coast of Sibutu Island.
The victims said they came from Turtle Islands and were bound for Bongao when the
vessel developed engine trouble due to the rough seas.
The boat was towed to Bongao.

 Drug pusher killed in Cabanatuan buy-bust
CAMP OLIVAS, City of San Fernando, Pampanga – A suspected drug pusher was
killed in a buy-bust operation in Barangay Valle Cruz, Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija
on Wednesday, Nov. 16.
Col. Richard Caballero, Nueva Ecija police officer-in-charge, identified the fatality as
Arnold Mateo.
Mateo fired his gun after he sensed that he was dealing with a police poseur-buyer.
Lawmen returned fire, killing the suspect.
Recovered from the crime scene were a caliber .45 pistol with live ammunition, four
heat-sealed transparent plastic sachets containing suspected shabu weighing 21
grams with an estimated Dangerous Drug Board value of P142,800, and the P1,000
marked money.
Police Regional Office 3 Director Brig. Gen. Cesar Pasiwen said they are conducting
a series of anti-drug operations in Central Luzon in line with the directives of PNP
chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr.

 DPWH completes flood control project in Nueva Ecija
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed a flood
mitigation structure along Coronel River which will serve as the first line of defense of
communities living along the river in Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija
In a report to DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan, DPWH Region 3 Director Roseller
Tolentino said that the 830-lineal-meter flood control structure was built to protect
local residents against overflowing of Coronel River during typhoon season.
The DPWH chief pointed out that the flood control structure will have a significant
impact on the agricultural lands and residential communities in the area since flood
incidence will be tremendously reduced.
It is expected that the flood shield structure will be a major factor for a more
progressive economy as agricultural yields will increase and the transport of local
products to the trading partners will be done more expeditiously.
The P81.4-million project was funded under the General Appropriations Act (GAA) of
2022 and undertaken by the DPWH Nueva Ecija Second District Engineering Office
(DEO) under its chief Elpidio Y. Trinidad.
Earlier, the DPWH had completed three local roads which it said will boost the
agricultural development in the towns of Bongabon, Gabaldon, and Llanera in Nueva
Ecija.
The improvement of a total of six-lane kilometers of road was completed by the two
district engineering offices (DEOs) in Nueva Ecija.
In the town of Bongabon, the DPWH Nueva Ecija Second DEO has provided a much
improved road access to the farming communities with the completion of the 2.38
lane kilometers of local road in Barangay Rizal.
The DPWH Nueva Ecija Second DEO assured the public of safer and convenient
travels in Barangay Tagumpay, Gabaldon as 1.98 lane kilometers of road was raised
that were previously ‘muddy’ during the rainy season.
Meanwhile, the DPWH Nueva Ecija First DEO had improved the condition of the 1.7
lane kilometer road that eased the transport of agricultural machinery to the
farmlands in Barangay Bosque, Llanera.
Bonoan said the newly-paved roads are expected to further enhance the agricultural
output in the said towns with better accessibility and efficient transport of farm
products to the market centers in and beyond the boundaries of Nueva Ecija.

Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference semifinals on a high note with a
three-set sweep of the Chery Tiggo Crossovers, 28-26, 25-17, 25-23, at the
PhilSports Arena in Pasig City on Thursday.
The HD Spikers, led by guest player Tai Bierria, made light work of the Crossovers.
She finished with 21 points in three sets to pace Cignal.
Cignal fended off Chery's bid to extend the match in the third salvo when a cross
court kill from Mylene Paat tied the game at 23-all late.
But a smart 1-2 play from Gel Cayuna and a Paat hit that went awry shut the door on

MANILA, Philippines — After several months of relative silence, television
personality Kris Aquino has unveiled new updates regarding her health as she
celebrates Thanksgiving in the United States.
Kris posted on her Instagram account a photo of her two children, Josh and Bimby,
whom she called the reasons why isn't giving and continuing to fight.
The host started her post's caption by thanking her friends in the Iglesia ni Cristo
faith for traveling to her and anoint her with healing oil, the Carmelite sisters in
Quezon who include her in daily prayers, and special thanks for Lingayen-Dagupan
Archbishop Soc Villegas.
"It’s Step 1 on what will likely be more than 18 months of diagnosis & treatment. I’m
signed up in a hospital’s center for those with rare & undiagnosed illnesses," shared
Kris. "My last set of test results were conflicting; that’s why I chose to have my full
diagnosis & treatment with a team of multidisciplinary doctors.
Kris explained that she had to submit all her medical records from 2018 when she
was first diagnosed with an autoimmune diease in Singapore; she had teleconsulted
