Fifty-six dead as quake shakes Indonesia's Java island

CIANJUR, Indonesia — A shallow 5.6-magnitude earthquake killed at least 56

people and injured hundreds when it damaged buildings and triggered landslides on
Indonesia's main island of Java on Monday, officials said.
Doctors treated patients outdoors after the quake -- felt as far away as the capital
Jakarta -- left hospitals without power for several hours.
"You can see it yourself, some got their heads, feet sewn outdoors. Some got
stressed and started crying," West Java governor Ridwan Kamil told a press
conference broadcast on Kompas TV.
He added that power had been partially restored by the evening, without specifying if
through a generator or connection to a power grid.
The afternoon quake was centred in the Cianjur region of West Java, according to
the United States Geological Survey, with local authorities saying 56 people had
been killed and over 700 wounded.
"Because there are still a lot of people trapped on the scene, we assume injuries and
fatalities will increase over time," said Kamil as ambulance sirens blared throughout
his press conference.
The majority of deaths were counted in one hospital, head of Cianjur's local
administration Herman Suherman said earlier, with most of the victims killed in the
ruins of collapsed buildings.
He told local media the town's Sayang hospital had no power after the quake,
leaving doctors unable to immediately operate on victims.
More health workers were urgently needed due to the overwhelming number of
patients, he added.
Locals rushed victims to the hospital on pickup trucks and motorbikes, according to
footage obtained by AFP.
They were placed in front of the facility as residents spread a tarpaulin on the road
for the bodies.
Kamil, the governor, said multiple landslides had cut off road access to some areas
and bulldozers were being used to open them up.

Manila Zoo reopens; entrance fee hiked
MANILA, Philippines — The Manila Zoo reopened to the public yesterday after a
much needed rehabilitation, but residents were dismayed over the increase in
entrance fee.
Mayor Honey Lacuna led the reopening of the zoo.

The increase in entrance fee at the Manila Zoo also disappointed some netizens,
especially the residents who last visited the zoo for less than P100.
Non-Manila residents who used to pay P100 before the pandemic need to shell out
P300 to visit the refurbished zoo.
Manila adult residents will be charged P150. Persons with disabilities and the elderly
will get a discount.
Children will be charged P100 and P250 for city resident and non-Manila resident,
respectively.
The city government defended the entrance fee increase, citing the redevelopment
of the zoo and its new features.
Lacuna said the increase in fees would boost the city’s revenue collection as well as
make the zoo financially self-sufficient.
The zoo features an Animal Museum, Botanical Garden and Butterfly Garden. This is
the only renovation of the zoo since it opened in 1959, with glass enclosures for the
animals, elevated viewing decks and pathways for the public.
In January 2019, former Manila mayor Joseph Estrada ordered the closure of the
zoo after then environment secretary Roy Cimatu tagged the zoo’s sewage as a
major pollutant in Manila Bay.
The succeeding mayor, Isko Moreno, ordered a renovation of the zoo with P1.7
billion funding.
The zoo’s new design was inspired by an undergraduate thesis by University of
Santo Tomas architecture graduate Kevin Siy.
Siy wanted to make the zoo closer to the animals’ natural habitat, and give its
longtime resident Mali a bigger, loam sand pen to cushion her feet.
The zoo also houses “Kois,” an anagram of Moreno’s nickname, the white Siberian
tiger donated by the Safari and Adventure Park in Pampanga.
The Siberian tiger is considered endangered, according to the International Union for
Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species.

State of calamity in Nueva Ecija as 'Karding' leaves behind ruined crops,
damaged structures

MANILA, Philippines — The provincial government of Nueva Ecija has declared a

state of calamity due to damage to crops and livelihood caused by Typhoon Karding.
A declaration allows the use of calamity funds and imposes a price freeze on basic
goods.
In its resolution declaring the state of calamity, the provincial board noted that Nueva
Ecija — which has five cities and 27 towns — is among the provinces "severely hit"
by the typhoon.
It also said, citing data from local government offices, that typhoon caused "huge
damages on the crops and livelihoods of Novo Ecijanos" as weall as to infrastructure
in the province.
Initial Department of Agriculture estimates put damage to agriculture at P141.38
million, with rice, corn and other high-value crops across 16,200 hectares of
farmland left unusable in the wake of the typhoon. The DA based the estimate on
reports from the Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos Region, Central Luzon and
Calabarzon.
The Office of Civil Defense, citing initial reports, said the number of Filipinos affected
by the typhoon is "very small" and attributed this to preparations by local
governments and by individual residents as 'Karding' approached Luzon.
"Patuloy po tayong magdasal para sa mabilis na pagbangon ng Nueva Ecija (Let us
continue to pray for the quick recovery of Nueva Ecija)," Umali said.

Beermen, Tropa make final push for quarters

MANILA, Philippines — Bay Area is out to secure a coveted Top 2 seeding and
twice-to-beat advantage in the playoffs while TNT, with a new import in tow, is
fighting for dear life.
With clear intentions, the pacesetting Dragons (9-2) and the ninth-running Tropang
Giga (4-6) tangle in a crucial PBA Commissioner’s Cup tussle today at the PhilSports
Arena.
“It’s an important game for them and an important game for us,” Bay Area coach
Brian Goorjian said of the 3 p.m. encounter.
Also hitting the court with the same urgency and strong motivation is seventh-
running San Miguel Beer (4-5), which like TNT, is making a final push for the
quarters. The Beermen gun for a pivotal fifth win in the 5:45 p.m. mainer versus
Terrafirma (1-9).
The Dyip climbed out of a horrendous 25-game skid via a 124-114 overtime victory
over NLEX last Friday and are now in a rare position to go back-to-back.
Goorjian braces for war versus the must-win Tropang Giga, especially with Chot
Reyes at their helm.
“I go a long way with coach. I came here in the 1990s and played his team and they
totally dominated us. We’ve forged a good relationship and I’m looking forward to
reacquainting. He’s a man I respect and I like and I know his team’s going to be
tough and prepared,” the Australian tactician said.
The Tropang Giga showed their toughness in pushing Barangay Ginebra to the limit
while playing all Filipino before yielding, 89-85, last Sunday.
TNT has since signed up European leagues veteran Matt Mobley after Cameron
Oliver went down with knee sprain and sat out the Ginebra game.
“We expect Matt to be our creator and inject energy in our offense,” team manager
Jojo Lastimosa said of the 6-foot-4 Mobley. “He’s not a big guy who can dominate
inside but we are hoping he can make our team faster.”
The Tropang Giga also hope veteran playmaker Jayson Castro recovers fast after
limping out of the Ginebra match with an ankle sprain in the third quarter.
Lastimosa said Castro is listed as “day-to-day.”
“It’s not as severe as we have anticipated but it’s still sore,” he said.
If successful in bringing down the Dragons, TNT climbs back into the Magic 8 and
carries a big momentum going to its final elims assignment versus SMB on Saturday.
