Introduction
Introduction
Innovation is the
generation of new ideas
or application of exiting
ideas to a new situation
resulting in improvement
in the organization
Introduction ( cont.)
• Medical surgical nursing skills are the
backbone of health care delivery system as
they contribute in patients care within the
all nursing speciallities . Medical Surgical
Nurses should be up to date and educate on
all of the latest technology and procedures
in the nursing field and hold one of the most
demanding and challenging careers in
nursing
The Key Pillars for Improvement In Medical Surgical
Nursing is to Improve and Keep up with
Innovations in:
Nursing education
Nursing research
Nursing practice
1- New Trends regarding
Medical-Surgical Nursing
“Education”
- Nurses should achieve diverse and higher
levels of education and training through an
improved educational system
COMPETENCY BASED EDUCATION (CBE)
Competency-based education aims to make
students more competent through acquisition of
the required competencies (knowledge, skills,
attitude and ethical values) and further
development of the already acquired
competencies.

What are the keys for improvement on
nursing education?
Teacher
Learner/
Student
Curriculum
Learning
environment
Methods of
teaching
and
evaluation
E- learning/Distance learning:
is an online system allow students and staff
to communicate effectively. Students can
access their course from their home through
using technologies such as ipade, mobile phones,
social networking tools.
Blended Learning is a combination of offline
(face-to-face, traditional learning)
and online learning in a way that the one
compliments the other
Concept-Mapping
is a graphic organized instructional tool
that represent relationships between ideas,
images, or words that assists students to:
- Connect between different nursing concepts.
- Formulate relations and new ideas.
- Improve critical thinking and decision making
for solving problem.
Jigsaw Classroom
It is a method of organizing classroom activity
that makes students dependent on each
other to succeed .It breaks classes into groups
and breaks assignments into pieces that the
group assembles to complete the (jigsaw)
puzzle .
For evaluation
• Use valid and reliable competency assessment
method for practice. e.g.
– Virtual labs
– High-Fidelity Simulation
– Objective structured clinical examination (OSCE).
– Objective structured practical examination (OSPE).
– Objective structured video examination (OSVE)
– Digital or Electronic Portfolio
Virtual Labs
• A virtual laboratory is an interactive environment for
creating and conducting a life like simulated
experiments on the computer screen by combine
animations, illustrations, and videos.
– Give students the opportunity to perform a task or conduct an
experiment.
– Simulate physical laboratory experiments.
– Improve thinking skills.
High-Fidelity Simulation
• Simulation based education is a powerful educational
intervention and innovation to increase nurses
learner competence, teamwork, self-confidence
measured in the learning laboratory. Students Learn
to enhance their own ability to handle a similar
situation in real life.
(OSCE) & (OSPE)
OSCE and OSPE are multi-station, objective
examination for clinical subjects used for
evaluating students’ clinical/practical skills e.g.
history taking, physical examination, wound
dressing, drugs administration, giving a health
education, checking vital signs, communication,
attitude, simple procedures etc. using agreed
checklists.
Objective structured video examinations (OSVE)
• It is a short learning videos (often 3-5 min) that is
designed to meet a specific learning outcomes.
• It is effective in cases scenario-based learning.
• This method is learner-centered with intense
interaction between participants as they build their
knowledge and work together as a group to examine
the case.
Digital or Electronic portfolio
• Electronic Portfolios are a creative means of
organizing, summarizing, and sharing student
achievements as files, text, images ,etc., on web.
• It used as part of student evaluation along with
other assessment tools such as standardized tests.
2- Innovation and New Trends
Nursing Research
Expended Dissemination of Research
Findings
• Expanded Dissemination of Research Findings
and Increased Visibility of Nursing Research
through access of scientific and reliable web
sites e.g., Egyptian Knowledge Bank , Google
scholar , Research gate.
• The Egyptian Knowledge Bank (EKB) is an online
library archive and resource that provides access
to learning resources and tools for educators,
researchers, students, and the general public of
Egypt.
• Online Library resources includes :
– Elsevier
– SAGE Online Journals
– Scopus
– Springer Journals
– E-Books
– Wiley
– Cambridge University Press
• Google Scholar It is a simple way to search
for scholarly literature. Search across
many disciplines and sources:
–Articles, Theses, Books, Abstracts, etc..,
• Access: https://scholar.google.com.eg
• Research Gate is available to consumer,
students, researchers and scientists from all
scientific fields, ….etc.
• The researcher can set up and present his
historical, earlier and recent work or
publications.
EVIDENCE BASED RESEARCH
▪ Involves collecting, evaluating and implementing
evidence to improve patient care and outcomes.
• It Arising from well conducted and reviewed research
studies, ideally conducted in clinical areas.
Precision(personalized) Nursing :
• Is nursing care based on patient needs. So, the
nurse researchers should develop more tools
related to health data collection and improve
the ability of data analysis to provide clinical
nurses with a prospective guide.
Current Trends in Nursing Research
• Searching new therapeutic modalities
• Nano Technology Research
• Gen therapy research
• Stem cell transplantation research
• Gene therapy is a technique for correcting defective
genes responsible for disease development by
inserting a “normal” gene into the genome to replace
an “abnormal” one.
• Current trends in gene therapy affect nursing
practice and research. The nurses are required to
have advanced knowledge, adherence to ethical
and regulatory guidelines of gene transfer and
safety and standardized techniques for patients’
care
• Marrow injury can occur because of primary
marrow failure, destruction or replacement of
marrow by disease, or intensive chemical or
radiation exposure.
• Expanding research in this area and prevalence of
this trend lead to increase demand for specialized
training nurse.
3-New Trends in Medical Surgical
Nursing specialty Practice
New trends in Nursing Practice
Using New Trends Technology in practice is
an important tool for improving nursing
performance, providing quality of health
care and patient’s safety .
Nanotechnology application and covide-19
• Nanotechnology could help the fight
against COVID-19 through different
approaches, such as avoiding viral
contamination by:
• (a) design of infection-safe personal
protective equipment (PPE).
• (b) development of a nano-based
vaccination to cellular immune
responses.
Cont., Nanotechnology application and covide-19
• The CDC (U.S. Centers for Disease and
Control and Prevention, 2020) estimates up to
40% of infected individuals with Covid -19 do
not experience symptoms.
design of highly specific and sensitive
nano-based sensors to quickly identify
the infection.
