Location
Maguindanao is situated in the central section of Mindanao, bordered by Lanao del Sur to the north,
Cotabato to the east, Sultan Kudarat to the south, and the Illana Bay to the west.
Maguindanao comprises 37 municipalities, further subdivided into 508 barangays. Cotabato City, is
now currently geographically grouped with Maguindanao by virtue of the Cotabato City Council
Resolution authored by Councilor Marouf Pasawiran and as a result of the January 2021 Plebecite in
the inclusion of the City as part of BARMM.

Topography
The Province of Maguindanao may be divided into two (2) physiographic units, the southwest
cluster and the Maguindanao lowland. The southwest mountain cluster includes the two (2) big
group of mountain elevation of Binaca and Blit. They are separated by the Valleys of Matuber
River flowing northwest into the Moro Gulf and Lawasa-ig in to the Mindanao Sea. The
Maguindanao lowland includes the extremity of the Cotabato base northeast of the provincial
highlands. The area approaches the seas and the swamps of the Libungan marsh. Thick
accumulation of detritus materials derived from the weathering and erosion of the adjacent
emergent land mass compose the sea.
The Rio Grande de Mindanao is known as the biggest and the longest river in Mindanao. The
northwest boundary of the Province and as such as the west bank is within the jurisdiction of
the province. The rivers meanders with flood rains developed at places together with extensive
delta, which caused its immediate vicinity marshy. It drains westward into the Illana bay and the
Moro Gulf. Several small streams and creeks are perennial type while the rest are intermittent.
Land Area
Maguindanao has a total land area of 597,052.79 hectares. The Province is composed of Thirty
Six (36) Municipalities with 508 barangays. Sultan Kudarat municipality is the seat of the
Provincial Capitol.
Land Capability
Classes A, BE, BW, BS are classified as very good land. These land areas are suitable for crop
cultivation with varying requirements for soil conservation, while DE is classified as fairly good
land that requires special soil management for its very low fertility. This land is suitable for
limited cultivation and best suited to pasture or forest.
Soil Classification
There about ten types of soil found in the Province of Maguindanao. Among the principal soil types
are clay loam and sandy loam, which are favorable for the cultivation of rice and corn. These soil
types are with the areas covered by the municipalities of Datu Piang, Buluan, Datu Paglas, Upi,
Ampatuan, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Kabuntalan, Sultan Kudarat and Parang. Buldon and Matanog have
generally sandy loam soil. Mountain soil, which are undifferentiated, northwestern and
southwestern portion of the province. Ampatuan and Datu Odin Sinsuat have this type of soil.
Drainage Condition
The drainage condition in the province is fairly poor with some portion classified as good to fair
drainage. These conditions are mostly found along the plains and valleys. In the upland areas the
drainage conditions range from good to fair to excessive erosion as a result of massive forest
destruction.
Climate
Maguindanao falls under type E characterized by more or less even distribution of rainfall
throughout the year. The wettest month having at least three times the rainfall of the driest months.
Its temperature ranges from 22.9 c. to 32 c., its hottest months from March to June and the coolest
from November to January.
