Warmup and Stretches(5-10 min)
2 up and downs of the gym will be the warm up, followed by some dynamic stretches. The class
will be split into 3 lines, to do the dynamic stretches from one line in the gym, to another. We will
then state our objective and goals of the lesson, and then splitting the class up into 3 groups to
start doing the drills.
Objective: The objective of our lesson today is to become better basketball players, by
working on some skills like shooting, dribbling, defending, and passing. After we have worked
on our basketball skills we will put them to the test, in 5v5 games.
Groups Drills (33 min) (Each section is 10 min with a min for transition to each group.)
Dynamic Stretches
● High knees
○ Knees go above waist height
● Butt kicks
● Lunges
○ Moving forward
○ Front knee doesn’t go past foot
○ Back Leg is at 90° angle
● Daisy picking
○ Front leg is straight
● Frankensteins
○ Leg goes up, and touches opposite hand
Shooting
● Skill points
○ Hold the ball in a W shape w/ hands
■ Dominant hand on the bottom
● Non-dominant hand doesn’t influence trajectory
■ Thumbs don’t have to touch
○ Athletic Stance
■ Feet shoulder width apart
■ Knees slightly bent
■ On the balls of feet
○ Elbows in
■ Most important is dominant elbow being straight
○ Jump
■ Power of the shot comes from the whole body
● Mostly from legs, and core
○ Release
■ Shooting arm, elbow extends in a straight line towards the net
■ Flick wrist
● Wrist should remain relaxed the whole time
○ Follow through
■ Wrist, and fingers pointed at the net
● Imagine reaching your hand into the net
■ Hold until ball lands
● Drills
○ Rebound Drill (3 mins)
■ Group members split into groups of 6
■ 3 line up beside the net, 3 line up in front of it
● Beside=Rebound line
● Front=Shooting line
■ First in shooting line, shoots the ball, and goes to the back of the other line
regardless of whether the shot makes it in
■ First in rebound line goes to back of other shooting line
■ Repeat
○ 3 points drill (5 mins)
■ Group members line up on one side of the net
■ Group members toss ball forward, take two steps and shoot
● I rebound
■ Group members shoot 45 degrees left and right from the net, as well as straight in
front
■ Shooter goes to back of the line
■ Repeat
Defense
- Face the player
- eyes/head looking at the person rather than the ball
- Arms out, on the balls of your feet, knees bent
- Keep your back to the basket
- As the player gets closer, increase pressure/move closer, move hands up as they may try and
take a shot
- When defending those who don't have the ball(waiting for the pass), try to keep in front of them,
and block of any possible path through which a pass can be received
Dribbling
- Use the tips/pads of your finger rather than your palms
- Make use of your wrist(don’t slap the ball)
- Try and dribble below the waist (better control)
- When dribbling, keep your head up, and look ahead, rather than the ball
- Push hard on the ball, to keep control of it
Drills
- We decided to combine our dribbling and defense into a single drill
- There will be people dribbling, and there will be people defending
- The dribblers will try to dribble past the defenders, and possibly score, or get to a certain point.
The defenders will try and defend the dribblers. This could be done as 1v1 or 2v2. This will let the
students make use of everything that they learnt during their turn with us.
Passing
There are 3 types of passes: Chest Pass, Bounce Pass, and Overhead pass. Out of these there are 2
types of passes that we will be focusing on the Chest and Bounce passes.
Chest Pass:
● Skill Points
○ Step into your pass (either foot works)
■ Add power to your pass
○ Have a follow through on your pass.
■ Thumbs Down is the follow through
■ Adds power and control to your pass
■ Makes sure your pass isn’t too hard or soft
○ Look at the person before you pass
■ Aim your pass
■ Let the person know that you are passing the ball to them before you do actually
pass it
Bounce Pass:
● Skill Points
○ The same points as chest pass
○ Bounce it so that the ball goes to where the person will be at the end of the pass
■ Bounce the ball a bit further than the middle of you and the person you are
passing to
■ The bounce on the ball shouldn’t die before it gets to the person
■ The bounce on the ball so it isn’t too low or high where they can’t get it.
■ If the bounce happens too close to the person, the ball will hit their legs and they
won’t catch it
■ If the bounce happens too far from the person, the ball won’t reach them
Receiving a Pass:
● Skill Points
○ Ready position
■ Feet at shoulder width, knees bent, arms in front of you
○ Absorb the pass
■ Take a step back after receiving the pass so you can absorb all the power coming
from it
○ Set a target
■ Set a target for the passer so he can pass the ball to you.
○ Open up
■ Get away from the defender so the ball can be passed to you.
Drills:
● Drill 1: We will put the class in partners. One gets on the black line while another gets around 8 m
away from their partner and the pass the ball to each other
○ Passes can include either bounce or chest passes.
○ This works on passing on receiving the ball
● Drill 2: Two groups of partners will be combined to get groups of 4. Their will be a square of
cones set up. 1 person will be inside the square and 3 will be on the cones. The one person in
the square will be trying to get the ball while the others will be trying to pass the ball around so
the person can’t get the ball. The 3 people can move around in the square if they don’t have the
ball.
○ This works on moving into open spaces and passing the ball when someone is on the
move (Don’t pass it to where they are, pass it to where they will be.)
The Games (25 min)
The last 25-30 mins will be spent playing games. There will be five teams, with 4 playing at a
time. If needed subs will be made every 2 minutes. 2 of our group members will be on the court
at once. One will keep score, and another ref the game. Since we’ll use 2 courts, there will be
four group members on the court at once. The fifth member will sit a game out to take a break.
The games will last 5 mins each(subject to change based on the time that may be left after the
drills).
