SOP Stage-1 UPS Failure

This standard operating procedure outlines the steps to safely shut down a stage 1 unit during a 220V AC UPS failure at the NTPC Ramagundam power plant. Key steps include immediately tripping the boiler, ensuring the 6.6kV station supply has changed over, starting the DC emergency oil pump, observing the turbine from local controls, and engaging the turning gear once the turbine reaches zero speed. Once the UPS is restored, the unit can be lit up and synchronized again.

Standard Operating Procedure

1. Purpose
 Procedure to be followed and necessary instructions to operation engineers
for handling and safe shut down of Stage 1 Units during 220 V AC UPS supply
failure.
2. Scope

 Stage 1 Units
3. Prerequisites

 Nil.
4. Responsibilities

 Unit Controller Engineer

 Desk Engineer
 Shift Charge Engineer
5. Procedure
Consequences of UPS Supply Failure:

 All the LVS and OWS will get switched off [Unit 1 - including offsite work
stations] except LVS 1 & 3 and OWS 1
 All the coal feeders will trip on VFD Failure & MFT will act on “LOSS OF ALL
FUEL”
 If the Boiler is running with oil gun, it continues in service.
 Turbine will be tripped on “EHC FAILURE” & HP-LP bypass will not be
available.
 Turbine speed indication will not be available in DCS & TG desk.
 Following alarms will appear along with Turbine trip though they are not
actual.
▫ Electrical over speed 112% Trip
▫ Hydraulic over speed / Local emergency Turbine trip
▫ Power-Load unbalance
▫ Turbine no load.
 All the Turbine desk operations & interlocks will not be available.

o Auto/Manual Opening of HP-LP Bypass

o Auto/Manual start of AOP, TGOP & TG Motor from Turbine desk.
o Turbine speed & Load measurement.
o Operation of Turbine drains & ventilation valves.
 All BFPs recirculation valves will get full open.
 All BFPs scoop become in-operative and remains in stay put.
 Boiler Hydrastep indication will not be available & it votes for Drum level Low.
 ID fans scoop become in-operative and remains in stay put.
 APHs air motor solenoid operation will not be available.
 Sox, Nox, CO, CO2 & O2 analyzers will not be available.
 SWAS analyzers will not be available.
 Fire Monitoring system & alarm will not be available.
 GPS clocks, Station LAN, PI Server will not be available.

Steps for safe Handling:

 LVS 1 & 3 and OWS 1 are equipped with stand-alone UPS with approximately
10 minutes back up time. Ensure critical operations as early as possible.
 Immediately trip the Boiler.
 Ensure 6.6 KV station supply changeover has happened otherwise manually
charge the unit SWGR & MCCs.
 Ensure DC EOP get started in auto [By lub. oil low pressure switch through
direct wired connection] otherwise start DC EOP from ECP.
 Inform to SCE, C&I maintenance & EMD [Battery & Charger Group]
 Observe the Turbine running condition from local and start TG Motor from
local selector switch. [Remote operation will not be available]
 Operation of IGVs of ID & FD fan will not be available after the failure of work
stations and reduce the total air flow.
 Stop major equipment BFP, FD, ID & CEP. Operations will be available
through UCD.
