Title SOP FOR LOAD SHEDDING RELAY CHECKING

1. Purpose of LSR:

The purpose of load shedding Relay is to prevent over speeding of the machine in
case of sudden load throw off, like islanding of the unit from the grid or tripping
of a loaded line etc.

2. Role of LSR:

Actuation of Load Shedding Relay retards the machine acceleration momentarily

by closing the steam valves for a very short duration to ensure that the speed of
the TG set cannot reach the trip setting of the hydraulic speed trip in case of load
throw off.

3. Description:

Three conditions are to be fulfilled simultaneously for the operation of LSR.

These conditions are
1. Frequency > 49 Hz
2. Load throw off > 50%
3. Residual Load after throw off< 30%

Pulse length =1.2 Sec

When all the above three conditions mentioned are satisfied (AND gate logic),
Load Shedding Relay will actuate for a maximum duration of 1.2 second. The
length of the pulse determines the closure time of the valves and is dependent on
the magnitude of the load transient. Actuation of LSR will lead to the
energization of two solenoids, one in the secondary Oil line of IP control valves
and the other is in the Aux. Sec Oil line. Thereby causing a rapid drop in oil
pressure & HP and IP turbine control valves close at maximum speed as a result.
This combined action of both IP and HP control valves will be sufficient enough
to retard the machine.
After the completion of the time duration ( pulse length), LSR resets, leading to
the building up of HP & IP Sec oils and opening of control valves again. Thus,
over speeding chances of the machine is prevented.

4. Check List for LSR Checking:

Sl.N Particulars Responsibility

o
1 RTS-1 & 2 supply to be made OFF C&I Engineer/shift in charge
2 RESET the Turbine & ensure build-up Desk Engineer
of Trip Oil Pressure
3 Raise the Starting Device to 100%. Desk Engineer
4 Open the Control Valves (HPCV & Desk Engineer
IPCV) to full open
5 Now actuate the LSR relay by Electrical Engineer/shift in
injecting voltage & current to full fill charge
the above conditions.
6 Ensure CLOSING & OPENING of HPCV Desk Engineer
& IPCVs during the actuation of LSR
relay
7 Ensure the events in SOE Desk Engineer
8 Later normalize the power supply of C&I Engineer/shift in charge
RTS-1&2.

Note: LSR checking to be done only in Shutdown Units.
