LONG VOWELS:

Long vowels are those in which the sounds of the letters A, E, I,

O, and U match the spoken name of the letter. Oftentimes, a word
with a short vowel is transformed into a long vowel by placing a silent
letter "e" at the end of the word “Silent E makes the vowel say its
name.”

Examples:

Long a Long i Long o Long u

crate shine nose rule
fame dive choke flute
grade prize phone cube
plane bride stove mule
stage arise smoke tube

The c-v-c-e pattern (consonant-vowel-consonant-final e) is a

long vowel spelling pattern which occurs quite frequently in early
reading and spelling. Basically, the phonics rule for this pattern states
that when a vowel and a final e are separated by a single
consonant, the first vowel is long and the final e is silent.

Examples: cake kite hope rude

The c-v-c-e pattern occurs most frequently when the long

vowel is a, i, and o and less frequently when the first vowel is e or u.

A long vowel is a vowel sound that is pronounced the same
way as the name of the letter itself. For example, the long U sound is
pronounced like "yoo," as would be the case in words like "mule" and
"tube." These are created by placing two vowels together or ending
the word with an “E”. We call them ‘long’ because we hold them
longer than the short sounds.

A spelling pattern that is true for all long vowel sounds is

the consonant-vowel-consonant-e(CVCe) pattern.

The CVCe pattern states that when a vowel and a final e are
separated by a single consonant, the first vowel is pronounced as
a long vowel sound and the letter 'e' is silent. (Examples: plane, Pete,
bite, nine, rope, note, cube, flute.)

Direction: Encircle the long vowel words in each of the following

sentences.
1. The slice of mango made me smile.
