ACCELERATOR POSITION SENSOR CIRCUIT

CUMMINS

FAULT CODE: 443

PID: P091 or S232
SPN: 091 or 620
FMI: 3 or 1

Accelerator Position Sensor Circuit

DESCRIPTION
The accelerator pedal assembly with accelerator position sensor
relays the accelerator percentage requested by the operator to the
electronic control module (ECM). Percent accelerator is used by
the ECM to determine fueling. In order for the accelerator position
sensor to function properly, it is necessary that a good +5-VDC
supply voltage is available.
COMPONENT LOCATION
The accelerator position sensor is located on the accelerator pedal
inside the vehicle cab.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
Step 1A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the accelerator position sensor.
Inspect the harness and the sensor connectors for the following:
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or expanded pins
• Corroded pins
• Moisture in or on the connector
• Missing or damaged seals
No damaged pins?

Yes - Go to 1B No - Repair or replace the OEM harness or the

accelerator position sensor, whichever has damaged
pins

Step 1B) Turn key switch ON and disconnect the OEM harness from the accelerator position sensor. Read
the fault codes using the diagnostic tool.

Fault Code 443 remains active?

Yes - Go to 2A No - Replace the accelerator pedal assembly or the

accelerator position sensor

Step 2A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Inspect the OEM harness
and the ECM connectors for the following:
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or extended pins
• Corroded pins
• Moisture in or on the connector
No damaged pins?

Yes - Go to 2B No - Repair or replace the OEM harness or ECM,

whichever has the damaged pins
Go to 4A

Step 2B) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the accelerator position sensor.
Disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Check for an open circuit. Measure the resistance from pin 29
of the OEM harness connector to pin C on the harness side of the accelerator position sensor connector,
from pin 19 to pin A and from pin 30 of the OEM harness connector to pin B on the harness side of the
accelerator position sensor connector.

Less than 10 ohms?

Yes - Go to 2C No - Replace the OEM harness

Step 2C) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the accelerator position sensor.
Disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Check for a short circuit to a chassis ground. Measure the
resistance from pin 29 in the OEM harness connector to engine block ground, from pin 19 and from pin 30 in
the OEM harness connector to engine block ground.

More than 10k ohms?

Yes - Go to 2D No - Replace the OEM harness

Go to 4A

Step 2D) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the accelerator position sensor.
Disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Check for a short circuit from pin to pin. Measure the
resistance from pin 29 to all other pins in the OEM harness connector, from pin 19 and from pin 30 to all
other pins in the OEM harness connector.

More than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 2E No - Replace the OEM harness

Go to 4A

Step 2E) Turn key switch ON and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Connect the OEM harness to
the accelerator position sensor. Check for a short circuit to a voltage source. Measure the voltage from pin
29 in the OEM harness connector to engine block ground, from pin 19 and from pin 30 in the OEM harness
connector to engine block ground.

Less than 1.0 volts?

Yes - Go to 3A No - Replace the OEM harness

Go to 4A

Step 3A) Turn key switch ON and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Measure the voltage out of
the ECM. Measure the voltage from pin 29 to pin 19 on the ECM OEM connector.

(+) 4.75 to 5.25 VDC?

Yes - Go to 4A No - Replace the ECM

Go to 4A

Step 4A) Connect all components. Turn key switch ON and disable the fault code. Start the engine, and let
idle for 1 minute. Depress and release the accelerator pedal several times to be sure the ECM is getting an
accelerator signal. Verify that Fault Code 443 is inactive.

Fault Code 443 inactive?

Yes - Go to 4B No - Return to troubleshooting steps or contact local

Cummins Authorized Repair Location if all steps
have been completed and checked again
Go to 1A

Step 4B) Connect all components, turn key switch ON and clear the inactive fault codes using the diagnostic
tool.
All fault codes cleared?

Yes – Repair is complete No - Troubleshoot any remaining active fault codes

with appropriate troubleshooting steps.
