HOW TO USE THIS COMPETENCY BASED-LEARNING MATERIAL
Welcome!
The unit of competency, “Participate In Workplace Communication”, is one of
the competencies of HOUSEKEEPING NC II, a course which comprises the
knowledge, skills and attitudes required for a TVET trainer to possess.
In this module, you are required to go through a series of learning activities
in order to complete each learning outcome. In each learning outcome are
Information Sheets, self checks, task sheets . follow and perform the activities on
your own. If you have questions do not hesitate to ask assistance from your trainer.
Remember to read Information sheets and complete the self-checks.
Suggested references are included to supplement the material provided in
this module.
Perform task sheets until you are confident that your output conforms to the
performance criteria checklist that follows the sheets.
Submit outputs of the Task Sheets and Job Sheets to your facilitator for
evaluation and recording in accomplishment chart. Outputs shall serve as your
portfolio during the institutional Competency Evaluation. When you feel confident
that you have had sufficient practice ask your trainer to evaluate you.
The result of your assessment will be recorded to your Progress Chart and
your Accomplishment Chart.
A Certificate of Achievement will be awarded to you after passing the
evaluation.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
1. Effective questioning and active listening and speaking are used to
gather and convey information,
2. Appropriate medium and non-verbal communication are used to
transfer information and ideas.
3. Appropriate lines of communication with superiors and colleagues are
identified and followed.
4. Defined work procedures for the location and storage of information
are used.
5. Personnel interaction is carried out clearly and concisely.
6. Team meetings are attended on time.
7. Own opinions are clearly expressed and those of other are listened to
without interruption.
8. Meeting inputs are consistent with the meeting purposes and establish
protocols.
9. Workplace interaction are conducted in a courteous manner
appropriate to cultural background and authority in the enterprise
procedure.
10. Question about simple routine workplace procedures and matters
concerning conditions of employment are asked and responded.
11. Meeting outcomes are interpreted and implemented.
12. Ranges of forms relating to conditions of employment are completed
accurately and legibly.
13. Workplace data is recorded on standard workplace forms and
documents.
14. Errors in recording information on forms and documents are
identified and rectified.
15. Reporting requirement to superior are completed according to
enterprise guidelines.

Characteristics of Formal English
The customary way a word or expression is used in speaking or writing is known as
Usage. Correct usage is language that is appropriate for the occasion.
Standard English is used by most educated people. Non-Standard English includes
dialect or language used by a particular social and oral or ethnic group.
It includes slang.
TWO LEVELS OF STANDARD ENGLISH
Standard English may be either formal or informal. Formal English is used in
serious speaking and writing. Informal English is used in conversation and in
casual writing.
Formal English:
In formal English, sentences are precisely worded and automatically correct. It
uses tradition standards of correctness. Its sentences structures are often complex
and it uses a wide vocabulary.
Characteristics of Formal English
1. No contractions are used. For example, do not is used instead of Don’t and it
is is used instead of it’s.
2. Slang is never used. Words such as phony are not acceptable.
3. The pronoun you is used to never used to mean a person. A specific noun or
the pronoun one is used instead.
4. Precise wording and correct grammatical structure are use. A sentence that
sounds like everyday conversation is generally not formal English.
Ex. She is our new Mathemstics teacher. Not
She’s our new math teacher.

INFORMAL ENGLISH
Informal English is used in everyday conversations and in personal letters. Sentences
tend to be shorter and ampler and many words and phrases that are not acceptable in
formal English may be used in informal.
Characteristics of Informal English
1. Contraction is acceptable in informal English.
2. Words and phrases used in friendly conversations, specialized vocabulary
such as sports terms and popular expressions, if not overused, are acceptable.
