Discussion
Vocal Music of Muslim Mindanao
The solo performance of vocal music is characterized by the high tessitura or the rained
voice using a variety of sounds added as a vocal style of the Muslims.
The following are the vocal forms in Muslim Mindanao:
1. Responsorial singing or leader-chorus type-used in thanksgiving rituals, in Peshit
on anniversary feasts or weddings and Du-udyeng or ta-tamiya on ceremonies
for the dead.
2. Song debates or alternating response-this is done by male and female singers,
the topics of the debate center on everyday life which are witty and humorous in
nature. Examples of these debates are:
Sala (Bukidnon),
Dai-eng (Kankanay),
Panonoroon (Maranao),
Taval-tavalan (Tagbanua),
Pisindil (Tausug), and Kambong (Manobo).
3. Epic songs- chanted at weddings, gatherings, or at evening entertainment
performances. These songs describe the lives of gods and heroes.
Examples of these are
Tulalang (Ata),
Afluluok (Bilaan),
Olaginon and Agyu (Bukidnon),
Radia Madaya,
Diwata Kaslipan/Rajah Indarapatra (Maguindanao),
Darangen (Maranao),
Daut (Mandaya),
Tad-um (Manguagan),
Ulahingan, Agyu, Tuwaang (Manobo), and Manggob (Mansaka).
4. Solo songs- performed unaccompanied by onor or pabubayok in all kinds of
occasions. Examples of these are the Maranao bayok kapamodi sung at
weddings and festivals or sung to praise important people, and bayok
kandarongan, a narration of the advantage of Bantugan epic hero.
5. Life cycle- events depicted through songs such as lullabies, songs related to birth,
courtship, wedding rites, and lamentation for the dead. Examples of these are:
ambay (Tiruray),
ngindung (Samal),
bombo-man (Maranao),
yug uyug (Mansaka),
sengal (Maguindanao),
emaga (Tlongot),
ta-miya (baloy),
yadadang (Bilaan),
adiyadi (Ata),
langan bata-bata (Tausug), and bua (Subanon).
6. Courtship and marriage ceremonial songs- love songs, like the Manobo courtship
songs sangong-sangong which are accompanied by saluray, kugot, or kitara.
7. Wedding feasts -where there is music making. Examples are sapo and ayyeng
(Kankanay), pamada, which is an introduction, and pamal-I kagum (Manobo).
8. Songs for the departed -songs performed for the dead. Examples of these are the
Manobo mourning song dalinday, tud-um, diaga, and funeral song tamandag.
9. Occupational songs- songs while farming, fishing, doing simple chores such as
indowan which is to call people to plant rice in Mandaya; sowa which is sung to
protect the fields from pests, and layad-layad which are harvest songs in
Manobo.
10. Songs for special rituals-performed for various purposes and important feasts.
Examples are the following:
khundit for curing the sick (Subanon),
angba (Ibaloy),
andaray and bansula for weddings (Bilaan),
bindayan for victory (lbaloy),
dumalongdong for the datu (Manobo), and
somodiot for seeking special favors (Subanon)
Keep this in mind
Pre-Islamic cultures influenced the indigenous vocal traditions of Muslim
Mindanao.
The vocal forms in Muslim Mindanao are responsorial singing or leader-chorus
type, song debates or alternating response, epic songs, solo songs, life cycle,
courtship and marriage ceremonial songs, wedding feasts, songs for the
departed, occupational songs, and songs for special rituals.
