Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to
discuss and understand the importance of irrigation potential and its distribution
examine the concept of soil-plant-water relationships for better understanding of crop
adaptation to water stress.
discuss and understand the concept of irrigation scheduling, irrigation and fertigation
methods and management of irrigation water in controlled environment
describe the parameters for irrigation water quality and its management
discuss and understand the drainage requirement of crops and methods of field surface and
subsurface drainage

type of water loss- soil and plants, water movement in plants, water stress, crop plant adaptation
to water stress
Unit III
Quality of irrigation water, water stress and its management : quality of irrigation water and
management of saline water for irrigation, water-use efficiency, water stress, effect on growth
and development, water stress injury and resistance, management of water stress through soil and
crop manipulations, excess soil water and management of excess water problems
Unit IV
Water needs and irrigation management: factors determining water needs of crops,
scheduling, methods of irrigation; micro-irrigation system; fertigation, management of water in
controlled environments and poly houses, water management of crops and cropping systems,
management of soil moisture stress, strategies of using limited water supply
Unit V

systems, inter-relationship of drainage with cropping patterns and types of farming, drainage
requirement of crops and methods of field drainage, their layout and spacing
Unit VI
Land suitability, classification, institutions of water management and legislations : land
suitability for irrigation, land irrigability classification, integrated water management, institution
of water management, farmer's participation, irrigation legislation
PRACTICAL
Soil water potential and constants
• To measure soil water potential by using Tensiometer.
• To measure soil moisture constants by pressure plate apparatus and preparation of
soil moisture characteristic curve.
Irrigation and water requirement
• To determine irrigation water requirement and irrigation efficiency.
• To measure irrigation water flow by different devices.
• To study evapotranspiration by lysimeter and field methods.
Hydraulic conductivity
• To determine saturation hydraulic conductivity by constant head Permeameter.
• To determine saturated hydraulic conductivity by falling head Permeameter.
• To determine infiltration rate by double ring infiltrometer
Irrigation water quality
• To study irrigation water quality management based on pH.
• To study irrigation water quality management based on EC.
• To study irrigation water quality management based on residual sodium carbonate
(RSC).
• To study irrigation water quality management based on sodium adsorption ratio
(SAR).
