Assessment Task 1 - Sport Study Task Sheet

The document provides instructions for an assessment task where students must analyze the physical demands of a selected sport by observing a game and identifying the fitness components, energy systems, skills and movements required. Students will analyze video of a game, record movement patterns, and discuss the fitness components, energy system interplay, and design a training session to improve the skills needed for the position.

10 CHOICE PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Assessment Task 1 – Sport Study (30%)

Task aim

The following assignment will require you to focus on a particular sport, as selected from the list below, and explore the
relationship between fitness components, energy systems and the skills/movements required to be successful in that particular
sport. You will record your finding in a report style format and demonstrate your knowledge of the key theoretical concepts
covered throughout the semester.

Description of assessment

Part One: Introduction

a) Individually, select a sport from the list below:
 Netball (centre player)
 AFL (midfielder)
 Soccer (midfielder)
 OR Choose another sport (& position) negotiated with teacher.

b) Provide a brief description of the sport and the skills involved.

Eg. Netball at the elite level is a fast flowing game played over 4 quarters of approximately 15 minutes each. The
skills/movements involved include catching and throwing. Catching and throwing are generally carried out while the player
moves, jumps, attacks, defends and/or shoots goals…..to be continued.

Part Two: Observation

a) View a quarter/half of the sport, closely watching/following the player specified above.
b) Insert the link to the video you have chosen.

Despite which option you choose you will need to:

b) Identify the movement patterns demonstrated by the player and place in a table. (Refer to appendix A and use this to take
statistics from the game/match)

Part Three: Analysis/Discussion

Using the movement patterns/statistics as evidence:

(1) Identify and explain the 3-4 main fitness components needed for playing the specific position of your selected sport.

(2) Discuss the interplay of energy systems in regard to your player’s movements during the game using the data you collected.
You must use examples from your observations to explain this.

(3) Using your knowledge of training methods, describe a training session using a particular training method that would be best
suited to improving/developing the fitness components, skills & movements that your player needs to be successful in the
game. Include a short explanation of the training session including the type of training method used, how long the training
session should go for (time), how many times the athlete should complete this session a week (frequency) and at what intensity
would you expect the athlete to be working (You may use diagrams if you wish).

*Conditions of assessment This report should be up to a maximum of 1000 words for a written response or for an
oral/multimodal presentation up to a maximum of 6 minutes. Appropriate headings, data collection and referencing should be
included.

APPENDIX A

distance greater than 5 metres a distance greater than 5 metres

The number of times the player jogs over a The number of times the player runs, ie
distance greater than 5 metres between a jog and fast pace over any
distance

The number of leaps/jumps the player The number of times the player uses a quick
performs change of direction

The number of intercepts/tackles the player The number of times the player picks the ball
