CIVL 5600/6600 Assignment 1a Due: August 30, 2021: Response-2000

This document outlines an assignment to analyze the moment-curvature behavior of two reinforced concrete cross sections, A and B, under different material stress-strain assumptions for the reinforcing steel. Students are asked to: 1) Compare the moment-curvature response of a cross section using Grade 60 vs Grade 40 steel. 2) Construct moment-curvature diagrams for Sections A and B (CIVL 6600 only) using a three-part stress-strain model for steel, iterating for strain hardening. 3) Repeat the analysis with a simple elastic-plastic steel model. 4) Plot and compare the moment-curvature diagrams. 5) Compute design strengths corresponding to the analyses.

CIVL 5600/6600

Assignment 1a Due: August 30, 2021

1) Consider the example cross section for which moment-curvature (M-φ) behavior was
determined in class (Flexural Analysis notes). Suppose that Grade 60 reinforcement
is used instead of Grade 40 to obtain approximately the same flexural strength.
Thus, fy = 60 ksi, and As = 2.67 in2. Compute and plot the M-φ response for this new
cross section. Compare it to the response of the example cross section. Compute
the sectional ductility ratio, µ. Compute εt at nominal strength for both cross sections.
Assume that a reasonable service load moment for both sections is 160 kip-ft (is it?).
Compute the stress in the tension steel (fs) caused by this bending moment.
Compare results for the two cross sections and discuss the implications for both the
service limit state and the strength limit state.

2) Use the three-part stress-strain relationship for reinforcing steel given on the
following page to construct moment-curvature relationships for the Cross Sections A
and B below 1. Use a rectangular stress block to calculate Mn and the associated
curvature (φn). Because strain hardening is included, you will need to iterate to find
the value of fs that satisfies equilibrium and strain compatibility conditions at ultimate
strength. f’c = 5000 psi.

3) Continuing with Cross Sections A and B, calculate Mn (and φn) using a simple linear-
elastic/perfectly-plastic (i.e. no strain hardening) stress-strain relationship for the
steel. Mcr, φcr, My, and φy should be the same as in Part 2 (Why?).
4) Plot the two M-φ relationships for Cross Section A on one graph for comparison
purposes. Repeat (on a separate graph) for Cross Section B.
5) Compute the ACI 318 design flexural strength (φMn) that corresponds to each of the
values of Mn you computed in Parts 2 and 3.
6) Discuss your findings.
Feel free to check your results against the results of a computerized sectional analysis program
such as Response-2000 (http://www.ecf.utoronto.ca/~bentz/home.shtml).
