Assignment # 2

This document contains two assignments for analyzing steel structures. The first assignment asks to analyze an angle section and a W-section under tension and determine the critical failure mode for each. The second assignment asks to design a built-up box section with dimensions of 12" x 12" that is subjected to tensile loads, and to design tie plates for connecting the members with bolts.

ASSIGNMENTS FOR STEEL STRUCTURES

Assignment No 02

Steel Structures CE 411

1. Analyze the following structural steel sections if they are subjected to tension, with dead

load of 120 kips and live load of 245 kips. Each member is made up of A36 steel. Assume

any suitable values for missing data.

a. An equal angle section of 4 x 4 x , having total length of 20 feet. The angle is

connected to gusset plate with single line of bolts on each leg, having three bolts

Spaced @ 3 c/c. The holes are punched for bolt diameters of 1/8. What is the

critical failure mode?

b. A W 12 x 35 section, connected with flanges. There are 4 bolts of size 1/8 in each

flange (2 on either side), 4 in a line spaced @ 4 c/c. The W section is further

connected to plates of thickness on each flange. Sketch out the problem and

determine as either W section is more critical to failure of the connected plates?

2. Design a built up section to form box shape, with dimensions of 12 x 12. The member is

subjected to tensile dead load of 45 kips and live load of 120 kips. Use A36 steel. Also,

design the tie plates. The choice may be angles or Channel shapes. For each connection,

assume the single line of bolts on either flange, total 4 bolts of 3/8 diameter, spaced @ 3

c/c. Assume any missing data or refer to code tables.
