MODULE 2 – ME AND THE PEOPLE AROUND ME
I. Introduction
Sexual behaviors among human beings, though biologically linked, are a
social phenomenon. It is affected by the state of our mind; therefore, there are
factors that stimulate every individual’s sexual behaviors. The youth do not view their
own behavior like adults did; rather they view it as a very natural act and part of
maturing.
In this module, you will learn that these factors that affect sexual behaviors
come from different backgrounds of society and an individual’s sexual behaviors are
always interpreted and learned.

II. Objectives:
At the end of this module, you are expected to :
1. Discuss the five factors that affects sexuality and sexual behaviors
2. Analyze the factors that affect one’s attitudes and practices related to sexuality
and sexual behaviors

Let’s Learn
MULTICULTURALISM– is a situation in which all the different cultural or racial
groups in a society have equal rights and
opportunities, and none is ignored or regarded as
unimportant.
VIRGINITY – state of a person who has never engaged in sexual interaction
MARRIAGE – Legally or formally recognized union of two people as partners
in a personal relationship.
PRE-MARITAL SEX – A sexual activity practiced by people before they are
married.
SEXUAL BEHAVIOR – A person’s sexual practices – whether he/she
engages in heterosexual (sexual attraction between
opposite genders) or homosexual (sexual attraction
between same sex and gender) activity.

Do You Know?

Human Sexuality refers to people’s sexual interest in and


attraction to others; it is the capacity to have erotic or sexual feelings
and experiences. It may be experienced and expressed in variety of
ways, including thoughts, fantasies, desires, beliefs, attitudes,
values, behaviors, practices, roles and relationships.
It is however impacted by the effects of human society and
culture and is largely molded by the environment.

5 FACTORS THAT AFFECTS SEXUALITY AND SEXUAL BEHAVIORS


The factors that affect one’s attitude and practices related to sexuality
and sexual behaviors are the following:

1. FAMILY- Family values oftentimes determine your own values. Every


single thing that you learn about yourself started and came from the influence of your
family. They guide you in the proper choice of clothing, toys and games to play and
proper behavior.

2. MULTICULTURALISM/CULTURE – Filipinos living in different regions


have diverse cultures and beliefs. Your cultural background can affect your values
regarding sexuality, along with the norms and standards set by society. And people
in general around the world have different beliefs when it comes to sex, virginity, and
abortion and even in dressing up.

3. PEERS – Like your family, your friends can also have a significant impact
on your views on human sexuality. Peers have the ability to influence a child’s
behavior especially as children spend less time at home and more time at school.

4. RELIGION – Traditional values and religious beliefs are among the most
common factors that affects sexual behaviors. Religion guide individuals in topics of
marital and pre-marital sex, marriage and divorce and in terms of use of
contraceptive methods.

5. MEDIA – The media plays a significant role in our lives as we regularly


watch televisions, listen to radio, search the internet, read newspapers, etc. Media
have a lot of sexual content that can influence children as they begin to develop their
own sense of sexual identity and understanding of cultural norms when it comes to
sexual behaviors.
