INSTRUCTION: Solve the following problems, correctly and systematically, and show all the necessary figures.

Prob. # 1] Can an air conditions of 21 oC DB and 80 % RH be obtained by evaporative cooling

and reheat from a condition of a) 38 oC DB and 12 % RH? b) 35 oC DB and 18 % RH? c) 41 oC
DB and 10 % RH? Diagram each process on a schematic psychrometric chart, to show your
answer and justification.
(20 points)

Prob. # 2] An air-water vapor mixture at 138 kPaa, 43 oC, and 50 % RH is contained in a 1.4 m3.
The tank is cooled to 21 oC. Determine a) the mass of water condensed; b) the partial pressure of
water vapor initially; c) the final mixture pressure; and d) the heat transferred.
(20 points)

Prob. # 3] A continuous drier is designed to produce, in 24 hours, 20 000 kg product containing 5

% water. The product enters the dryer with 35 % water. The air used for drying has an inlet
temperature of 20 oC DB and 45 % RH and is preheated to 65 oC before reaching the product.
The air leaves saturated at 43 oC. Determine a) the air flow rate in m3/s; b) the heat required in
the reheater.
(20 points)

Prob. # 4] A 5-TR Refrigerant –12 air conditioning system receives air at 32 oC DB and 75 %
RH and cools and dehumidifies it to 24 oC and 45 % RH. The R-12 discharge temperature from
the compressor is 43 oC and the evaporator temperature is 4 oC. Determine a) the air flow rate; b)
the water removed.
(20 points)

Prob. # 5] In an air conditioning unit 3.5 m3/s of air at 27 oC DB temperature, 50 % RH, and
standard atmospheric pressure enters the unit. The leaving condition of the air is 13 oC DB
temperature and 90 % RH. Using properties from the psychrometric chart, a) calculate the
refrigerating capacity, kW; and b) determine the rate of water removal from air.
(20 points)
