DUA-E-ILM COACHING CENTER

IUPAC Nomenclature of Organic Compounds

An Effort of: Engineer Nasim Zulfiqar
Step#1: Select the longest continuous carbon chain (parent chain). The parent chain must contain all the carbon atoms with substituents, double bonds, triple
bonds and carbons attached to the functional group. The chain may be straight or L-shaped.
The species outside carbon chain are either substituents or functional groups.
Step#2: Number the continuous carbon chain.
Numbering priority: functional group > multiple bonds > substituent
*Follow alphabetical order if there is a clash of substituents while numbering.
*If there is a clash of double and triple bonds, then give priority to double bond.
*If there is a clash of functional group then number as per the priority list.
Step#3: Follow the following pattern to name the IUPAC name of organic compound:
Substituent + Cyclo + Word Root + Multiple Bonds + Functional Group
Substituent: (Follow alphabetical order for the naming of following substituents)
-R (CH3=methyl, C2H5=Methyl, C3H7=Propyl, C4H9=butyl, C5H11=pentyl etc)
-OR (OCH3=methoxy, OC2H5=ethoxy, OC3H7=propoxy, OC4H11=butoxy etc)
-NO2 (Nitro)
-X (Cl=chloro, Br=Bromo, I=Iodo)
Cyclo: Don’t write cycle if the compound is open cycle.
Word Root: Write the number of carbon atoms in the parent chain.
1=meth, 2=eth, 3=prop, 4=but, 5=pent, 6=hex, 7=hepy, 8=oct, 9=non, 10=dec
Multiple Bonds:
For Single bonds write ‘ane’, for double bonds write the position with ‘ene’, for triple bonds write the positions with ‘yne’
Functional Group: If there is only one functional group then write the suffix. If different functional groups are attached to the same compound then write the suffix
of functional group with highest priority and write the prefix of others with substituents.
Functional Group Prefix Suffix
-COOH - -oic acid
-SO3H - Sulphonic acid
-COOR - -oate
-COX - -oyl halide
-CONH2 - -Amide
-CN Cyano -Nitrile / Cyanide
-COH formyl- -al
-COR oxo- -one
-OH hydroxy- -ol
-NH2 amino -amine
Notes to remember:
 Always use small letters for naming
 Don’t leave any space anywhere in the IUPAC name
 always put a comma between two numbers
 always put a hyphen ( - ) between a number and alphabet.
