The Restoration period in British drama began in 1660 after the restoration of Charles II to the English throne. This led to the reopening of theaters which had been closed. During this time, John Dryden emerged as an important playwright known for heroic plays, and a new genre called the Comedy of Manners developed which used wit to satirize the immoral manners of contemporary society. Notable playwrights of this new genre included William Congreve, Oliver Goldsmith, and Richard Sheridan.

Restoration Drama
 The period starting in 1660 is named Restoration period after the restoration
of Charles II to the reign of England.
 In British drama, there was an important event: the re-opening of the
theatres.
 John Dryden who was an important literary critic was also a playwright
known for a genre called heroic plays.
 A new kind of comedy appeared at the end of the 17th century: The Comedy
of Manners. It is marked by the use of wit and it gave a satirical picture of
the immoral manners of society at that time. Its most important playwrights:
-William Congreve: The Double Dealer (1694), The way of the World
(1700)
-Oliver Goldsmith: She Stoops to Conquer (1773)
-Richard Princeley Sheridan: The School for Scandal (1777)
