Fault Codes – P0045/34

DESCRIPTION
The turbocharger system is comprised of the Variable Nozzle (VN) type turbocharger, the turbo
motor drover and ECM.
The turbocharger has nozzle vane which opens and closes to control the volume of the exhaust gas
flowing into the turbine. This, in turn, controls the boost pressure, when the nozzle vane moves
towards the closing direction, the pressure increases. When the vane moves towards the opening
direction, the pressure decreases.
The turbocharger actuator built on the turbine side activates the nozzle vane. The nozzle vane
position sensor built on the actuator detects the opening angle of nozzle vane. The nozzle vane
position sensor signal is sent via the turbo motor driver to the ECM. Then, based on the signal, the
ECM actuates the actuator.
The ECM sends a target nozzle vane position signal to the turbo motor driver to obtain the nozzle
vane position for the optimal boost pressure in accordance with the driving conditions.
DTC No. DTC Detection Condition Trouble Area

When either condition below is met:

 Turbo motor driver
 Open or short in turbo motor driver  Open or short in turbo motor
P0045/34 circuit continues for 0.5 seconds or more driver circuit
 When communication error occurs  Turbocharger sub-assembly
between turbo motor and ECM  ECM
(1 trip detection logic)

Inspection: - Start with Precautionary tests:

1. INSPECT AXIAL PLAY OF TURBINE SHAFT

1. Using a dial indicator, insert the needle of the dial indicator into the exhaust side of
the turbine shaft.

2. Move the turbine shaft in an axial direction and measure the axial play of the turbine
shaft.

Maximum axial play:

0.11 mm (0.0043 in.)

If the axial play is greater than the maximum, replace the turbocharger sub-assembly.
2. INSPECT RADIAL PLAY OF TURBINE SHAFT

1. Using a dial indicator, insert the needle of the dial indicator into the oil outlet hole,
and set it in the center of the turbine shaft.

2. Move the turbine shaft in a radial direction and measure the radial play of the turbine
shaft.

Maximum radial play:

0.112 mm (0.0044 in.)

If the radial play is greater than the maximum, replace the turbocharger sub-assembly.

If NOT GOOD > Replace Turbo

If Good, Go to Step 3:
3. CHECK MOTOR FOR TURBOCHARGER CONTROL OPERATION

1. Remove the No. 1 exhaust manifold heat insulator (Click here) and No. 1 turbo
insulator (Click here).

2. Check the stroke.

NOTICE:

Make sure the DC motor's connectors are properly installed.

1. Turn the ignition switch ON and OFF.

2. Check the DC motor's operation. Check that the motor rod stroke is as shown
in A to D in the illustration below.

3. After the DC motor operates, visually check that the vane activation link
contacts the fully closed stopper.

NOTICE:

Never loosen or tighten the fully closed stopper's lock nut.

If the result is not as specified, check the ECM and turbo motor driver (see pages

4. CHECK TURBO MOTOR DRIVER

1. Check the voltage of the turbo motor driver.

1. Turn the ignition switch ON.

2. Measure the voltage of the motor driver.

Standard voltage:

Specified
Tester Connection
Condition

T8-8 (+B) - Body

9 to 14 V
ground

If the voltage is not as specified, Click here.

2. Check the resistance of the wire harness side connector.

1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.

2. Disconnect the T8 wire harness side connector.
3. Measure the resistance of the motor driver.

Standard resistance:

Specified
Tester Connection
Condition

T8-6 (GND) - Body

Below 1 Ω
ground
If the resistance is not as specified, Click here.

3. Connect the T8 turbo motor drive connector.

4. Check the turbo motor signal.

1. Connect a oscilloscope to the terminals of the ECM.

2. While idling the engine, check the waveform of the ECM.

Standard condition:

(a) Between E8-10

ECM (VNTO) and E7-7 (E1)
Terminal (b) Between E8-17
(VNTI) and E7-7 (E1)

5 V/Division, 20
Tester Range
msec./Division

Specified
Idling with warm engine
Condition

If the result is not as specified, replace the turbo motor driver.

HINT:

The waveform varies depending on the turbocharger operation.

If NOT GOOD > Replace Turbo (individual parts are as yet not available)

If GOOD >Step 5
5.CHECK WIRE HARNESS (TURBO MOTOR DRIVER - ECM)

1. Disconnect the E8 ECM connector.

2. Disconnect the T8 turbo motor driver connector.

3. Measure the resistance of the wire harness side connectors.

Standard resistance:

Tester Connection
Condition
E8-10 (VNTO) - T8-9
(VNTO)
Below 1 Ω
E8-17 (VNTI) - T8-4
(VNTI)
E8-10 (VNTO) or T8-9
(VNTO) - Body ground 10 kΩ or
E8-17 (VNTI) or T8-4 higher
(VNTI) - Body ground

If NOT GOOD > Repair / Replace Harness / Connectors

If GOOD > go To Step 6
6.CHECK WIRE HARNESS (TURBO MOTOR DRIVER - NOZZLE VANE POSITION
SENSOR, TURBO MOTOR DRIVE - DC MOTOR)
