Design Assignment: Problem Statement
CE351 – Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures
Instructor: Sandip Saha, School of Engineering, IIT Mandi 1st Semester, 2020-2021
Total Weightage: 25%
Problem statement:
Figure 1 shows architecture plan and sectional elevation of a single-story public building. The building is proposed
to be designed as reinforced cement concrete (RCC) framed structure having brick infill with following data.
Geometric Details: Floor to floor height = 3.2 m
Height of plinth = 0.6 m above ground level (G.L.)
Depth of foundation = 0.9 m below G.L.
Roof : RCC Slab with water proofing course
Walls : Brick masonry 230 mm thick and both faces are duly
plastered
Loads: (As per IS 875:1987) Live load : Variable
Floor/Roof finish : Variable
Grade of Concrete : Variable
Grade of Steel : Fe500 for main reinforcement, Fe250 for stirrups/transverse
reinforcement
Exposure condition : Variable
Design philosophy : Limit State Method (LSM) as per IS 456 (2000)
Safe bearing capacity of soil (kN/m2) : Variable
Figure 2 shows a tentative plan for the frame arrangements (location of beams and columns).
List of Assignments
Assignment 1: Load calculation for design of beam
Assignment 2: Design of slab
Assignment 3: Design of beam
Assignment 4: Design of column
Assignment 5: Design of footing
Detailed problem statement for individual assignments, deliverables, design input data and deadlines will be
declared as the course progress.
